Hello...

Im interested in purchasing a kit to disable ABS. I understand this has been discussed many times with many different opinions..

The only pre made kit i can find is http://www.off-the-road.de/XT-1200-Z/ABS-off-switch-XT-1200-Z.html .

I came across some discussion posts and internet web sites that refered to a Altrider kit, which I dont seem to be able to locate. so im assuming nothing came about from it.

Are there any other pre made kits available?

Lastly, is there any long term affects or possible damage that can be caused to the bike or the bike electronics by using a kit to disable ABS?

Thank you for any advice or help.

If you want switchable ABS, I cannot help you. If you simply want to disable ABS and leave it OFF, the easiest way is to remove the 30 AMP fuse at the solenoid under the right side cover. Your ABS will be OFF, the ABS light will come ON, you wont have ABS and there will be no other issues to the bike. If the lit ABS light annoys you, simply put a vinyl black circle over that light.

I think is quite a simple switch. I ask my dealeradn tell you, he did mine, much cheaper than the off the road one.

That's kinda how of-the-road DE does it with their ABS off switch kit. They pull that 30A fuse, and wire a switch with an inline fuse across the fuse socket...don't remember if a relay is part of the kit, but that would seem to be a smart choice.

I used 2 spade connectors to replace the 30A fuse and a covered toggle switch in the left dash. Easy peasy. ABS is off when the safety cover is open and the toggle is up. The turn ABS back on, close the safety cover and re-start the bike.

Super clean idea! Do you have to stop and re-start the bike each time to turn the abs back on?

Did you use a toggle switch rather for 30 amps? Looking online not having much luck finding one..
I used a 20A switch from Pepboy's. Switches are rated by how many amps they can take during making or breaking contact. The circuit is only carrying high amps when the ABS is actually operating. So the switch breaks contact at low amps therefore minimal arcing that would cause damage to the contacts. If you were to throw the switch while at the same time braking hard enough that ABS was active and do it repeatedly, you would eventually damage the switch. If you could do that just once your a lot better rider than I am.
Since once the circuit is interrupted the ABS will not come back on-line you don't need a toggle type switch. Any switch that will momentarily brake the circuit will do.

Thanks, I learned something electrical today about switches.

Any "known" issues that could arise by doing this mod? Damage to electrical system of bike?
That may be a bit of an unknown. But this mod.creates a condition exactly the same as if fuse failed. I assume that if the fuse blows no harm will befall system, therefore the switch will also cause no harm.

But I do not have thousands of miles and hundreds of on/off switchings to prove that.

Highly doubtful there would be any damage. Were are talking about making and breaking power to the ABS motor, which is not sensitive to that sort of thing.

Scratch that...I think the two spade connectors touched when i put the cover on.. think im all good :)

Love it !!
It would be more likely that you accidentally touched a bare part of one of the wires, or maybe one of the switch contacts to the frame, or to a metal part that is attached to to fame in some way (a ground). The spade connectors touching together won't blow the fuse. Glad you got it working!
