Hey fellow riders! Have any of you experienced rear wheel brake lock up? I have not fiddled with or tried to shut off my ABS system, but I had my rear wheel lock up on gravel when I applied the rear brake the others day. No excessive speed or stomping on the brake. Had the bike for two years and 20,000 kilometers. No idea how this could happen with ABS brakes. Anyone else ever run into this?

In my experience, it will allow some lock up/sliding on the rear with the abs.. that's a good thing IMO and yamaha designed it well.

Traction Traction control has nothing to do with it. Yes the rear will lock up still with ABS. For the most part it will allow a slight skid on gravel and if you are near stopping (very slow speed) it will lock up.

Now if you are engine braking. That is downshifting hard then the ABS has no control over that and the wheel will do as it pleases. It can only control brake pressure.

The front will also skid a little but is still controllable on dirt or gravel. Nice when on a steep downhill ( really really steep)

Now a BMW system is a whole diff animal. That is one great advantage of the Yamaha ABS system over theres.

Re: ABS and rear wheel lock up (figured out!)

Hey thanks for the reply tenere group, and it's nomorbills reply that allowed me to figure out what happened. I stalled the engine and it locked the rear wheel. I don't usually wear ear plugs, but that afternoon was really windy here in the prairies, and I decided to put some good ear plugs in. I was also wearing a new helmet that fit nice and snug on my head and ears...I was protected from the elements, but also could not hear a thing!

At the time of the lock up, I had made a split decision to make a corner that was coming up fast. I was coming down hard in my gears with my clutch in, shifting down from 4th or 5th down to 2nd or 3rd, and I bet I simply stalled the engine locking up the brakes and putting me into a skid. I did drop the bike by the way and that is why I never figured out that the engine was dead! Now a couple of days later, and thinking things through more clearly, it makes more sense that it was my driver error and not an ABS glitch as I had been thinking.

There is way too much research and development by Yamaha that goes into a bike like this to have faulty ABS be the cause of a lock up. So many expert reviews do rave about this ABS system and it gives me peace of mind to know it was the nut holding the handle bars that was to blame! ::015::

Sometime ago, I practiced locking up the rear wheel and boy did I try hard. KTM and BMW owners were all impressed. I thought the ABS on the S10 is one of the best of its kind.

Mmmmm ..... Interesting thread. Was out this last weekend doing about 50mph, Decided at the last second to turn. Hit the brakes and clutch (must have stabbed rear first) back wheel squealed for about 3 feet till I let up (no engine stall). Kind of took me by surprise thought ABS would not allow that. Never had ABS on a bike b/4. Hard front braking (linked) on gravel is very impressive. So far have not found a need to disconnect it. I'll have to play some more and try a hard rear brake again to see if it locks up.
