I am going to order a S10 ES in the next couple of days. What is a reasonable price to pay? Also, can buyers typically get a discount on accessories (luggage) when ordering bikes?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings from Wisconsin. There are some new 2015s advertised around here for $11995. There are no additional fees except sales tax and the usual title and registration fees. The one I saw was a non ES model in red at Port Yamaha in Port Washington WI. My only advice would be to forget about the Yamaha accessories even at 20% off, they are still overpriced. The aftermarket options are much better and usually less expensive. I am referring to crash bars, skid plates, panniers etc. Instead of trying to get a discount on Yamaha accessories, try to get the extended warranty (YES) included in your deal. Most of the Yamaha accessories that came on my bike are now taking up space in my garage. Good luck with your new ride.

Skip the Yamaha bags as they are not worth the money. If you want them buy them from someone here for around $600 complete. I just sold a complete set in black, all three bags and mounts, for $650.

My vote would be to purchase a very lightly used bike if you want one that is basically as new. They come up for sale and you can move them easily using that motorcycle moving service (name escapes me).

Are the Yamaha side cases really that bad? I wanted to package the deal - fewer large purchases/credit card bills keeps things quieter at home.

IMHO they're pretty bad. Lock quality is poor (see recent thread on locks falling out, very common) and I was very unimpressed with how they hook on the rail and the bottom rests on a single foot/locator. I used to think the BMW Variobags were the worst on the market but I felt the Yamaha ST boxes were giving BMW a run for the worst panniers. They're all plastic, the hinge is a metal pin surrounded by plastic interleaves, the lid stays are plastic cable, and in general they just don't feel sturdy. To top it off they're quite thick and ribbed plastic to give them some strength but in the end weigh pretty much the same as proper 2mm ally panniers.

I used my Yamaha bags on one trip and got fed up with the locks and the lids. My locks were very notchy and the plastic straps on the lids were not properly secured with a self-tapping screw into plastic. Yamaha could have done so much better.

And used is definitely where it is at for a bargain. Here's the entire deal for <$11k asking, bet it would sell for even less.

I bought a 15ES used @4k miles with a lot of farkles, Yamaha bags, mounts, skid plate, Corbin, engine guard for $12.7 once I factored in selling the Corbin seat.

The Yamaha side cases are plastic. They look nice, but the latch mechanism is plastic too. I think the list price is about $1000 for the side cases (panniers) and the mounting kit. A set of Touratech aluminum panniers with mounts is about $1100. There are plenty of other choices out there too. I wish I knew then what I know now. Also, most full coverage helmets will not fit in the Yamaha top case. If I were to buy another Super Tenere, I would get the bare bike and add Touratech side cases, Altrider luggage rack, and the complete Rumbux setup (crash bars and skid plate). Well, I've just about got myself talked into a new one now!

I was going to suggest walking in the dealership with a wad of cash (literally) and make a deal. works for me. I am lucky enough to be able to save up for my major purchases and it really saves money in the long run. A credit card alone cost the dealership 3% of the purchase amount. That is $360 on a $12,000 purchase.

So buy either buy a new (out of the box) Tenere (2014, 2015, 2016) or a loaded previously owned Tenere of the same years. Go to the dealer prepared to purchase. Do your homework. Know the rates. Know the prices. Have evidence for anything you state. Four years of YES can be had for less then $400. Do not pay more. Purchase from a dealer that you trust in the garage. This is a business deal. Treat it like one.

If you ride off-road a lot OEM Luggage can be a concern. Cost me $400 on one tip over. If you ride mainly road then OEM Luggage is nice since it fits tight, less air drag, and looks very nice, the cases and mounting hardware are light in comparison. When traveling I use one insert for everything I will remove to take into the motel/lodging and leave the other side case filled with what stays on the Tenere. I don't have a top case but the riders I know like it. Sort like a girlfriend... whatever works for you.

Engine guards (crash bars)... difficult to beat Altrider.

Exhaust... whatever works for you. I have had an Akrapovic for more than a year and haven't installed it.

Skidplate... ACD is a tough plate that protects a lot. Jaxon makes the ultimate engine guard/plate.

Accessory Lights... again, whatever works for you.

Windshield (Gen2)... many different windshields available. I have the OEM Touring windshield and like it a lot. Usually run it in the low position.

Windwings... the OEM Windwings are a good thing especially during winter riding.

Accessory Bar Bracket... prevents the windshield and accessory bar from bouncing. A forum member makes them and sells them for a reasonable price. This should not be an after thought.

Seat... read read read.

Rear Rack... again Altrider makes a very good rack.

Horns, Foot Pegs, Sidestand Big Foot, Rear Brake Slave Protection, Final Drive Coupler Protection, Fork Seal Protection, Handlebar Risers, Handlebars,... read read read.

A number of times, I've taken an ad from something like CycleTrader to a local dealer and they've found ways to match. Other times, we've needed to do Fly & Drive purchases.

I just bought a brand new 14 non-es for about 12k before taxes, it was 13.5 otd. Think it was a decent deal, the best I could find in ca at this time. I live in northern ca by the way. Seems prices vary quite a bit by region, I'm in one of the most expensive areas in the country. I agree with what everyone else has said, go for aftermarket accessories or used oem. No reason to pay the ridiculous prices for oem new. The dealer I got mine from wouldn't do more than something like a 10% discount on oem accessories which isn't nearly worth it.

Don't forget that the dealers have a LOT of leeway on YES extended warranty pricing too. Or you can buy it from any other dealer.

+1 on D&H. Great people to do business with, helpful and best price by far. Contacted my local dealers and they were as high as the quote from Mama Yama herself. Called D&H and got the $349 for the SAME thing. I strongly suspect my next bike will be coming from D&H just based on the service I got on the phone!!!

AltRider guards are great. Much prefer to OEM, stronger and I think look better. The OEM Yamaha panniers I got with mine were part of a "$1000 Yamaha Accessories" promotion. I've been well satisfied. You need to watch the locks (press down on lid while locking/unlocking) but they have worked well. They are nowhere near as robust as a decent set of Touratech, Jesse, or similar METAL Panniers. I would have went with aftermarket if I'd had to pay for 'em on my own. For street use and the occasional fire trail mine have worked very well, but if the bike was dropped, I'd expect 'em to be pretty beat up...

Own a 13 that I bought used and it came with the Yamaha bags, yes Yamaha screwed up pretty bad when they designed the latches, one of my latches fell out so I had to buy another latch and have a locksmith make it match my other locks, luckily this all happened close to home and not while on a big trip . Other than the crazy latches and the goofy plastic thing that controls how far the cover can open I've grown accustomed to the Yamaha bags and don't really mind them all that much, if Yamaha would completely redesign the latches and the open limiter so you could open and close them with only one hand I would probably be satisfied. That and no cruise control on the 13 are my biggest complaints.

Used can get you a lot including a transferable YES warranty, mine had four years and lots of goodies the owner installed on the bike.
Unless the clutch basket has been updated to a 2014 basket as well as the CCT stick with looking for something from 2014 on up.

Oregon is a helluva long way from Georgia, and you prolly got your heart set on the new ES, but... just spotted a 2012 in on Craig's List from a dealer (Hillsboro Motorsport) with ZERO miles for only $8,999. Presumably, they will try to charge assembly fee or whatever, but you could save a bundle. I could see getting them to discount accessories to sell the bike. Then you could familiarize yourself with your new ride by riding back to Georgia! Just sayin'...

I have the OEM panniers on my 2012 and they work fine. I loc-tited the tiny locking mechanism mounting screws when installing the keyed-alike locks and they've been fine. I like their integrated look, easy of install/removal, light-weight and size. $1,000 is way too much, but they work fine. Can't speak for their crash worthiness (knock on wood).

Good luck!

If I was to do it again, I would do as Ramsey says. I put the 2014 clutch basket in mine and also a manual cct so mine is good, but it was down time you won't have if you buy a little bit newer.
