Here I sit , back in Louisiana , 1 week later (almost to the minute) lateer I'm safe and sound in my driveway. Went to the Grand Canyon North Rim . Spent a week on the road. Before I left I said I wouldn't say anything good about the S10 unless I had no problems.
Well, I had no problems!
First day was the SS1000 The rest was 400-500 mile days. The 2012 Tenere performed sp!endily. I averaged 58 mpg in the mountains and 46 by the time I got home
The bike is the best I ever owned. I still don't like how it is a loud clunky thing until it gets going. Once up to speed it just hums - through my ear plugs.
My report is all good.
I had a great time and can't wait until next year for another long ride.
The area around Arizona and New Mexico is just beautiful!
Coming home across the Texas pan handle sucked. The winds will really work you.
The S10 has enough power to pass when you want, comfort all the way, and a goodly amount of range with the gas tank.
I found d staying just below 4,000rpm will get the best mpg. That puts you right around 73-75 mph actual..
Did very little off road but found standing up makes the dirt doable in tough p!aces .
It is more at home eating the miles on the slab IMHO
LOVE THIS BIKE!

Good to hear you had a nice time and the bike ran great.

You bring up an interesting point, thinking that this bike is more suitable for the slab. I primarily ride my ST on dirt. In other words, I take advantage of its highway prowess to get me to the beginning of the dirt roads, but my main desire is exploring off pavement here in NM. I think a lot of people who own the ST think this way, and I can only encourage anyone with this bike to put on some dirt-appropriate tires and crash protection and have at it. Turn off traction control, and ABS if you can, and this bike absolutely rocks for extended dirt road riding.

I went to an off-road weekend with about 70 other riders a few years ago in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, and I rode the ST there with my soft luggage. Well, I felt like the odd man out, because when we all met at the morning meeting place, I realized that everybody else had trailered their 250-650cc dual sport bikes there, and there I was on a bike everyone considered inappropriate for the task at hand. No matter. I did not sign up for the single track rides, but I was at the front of both groups I rode with that weekend, as we explored the Gila Mountains on some pretty gnarly forest roads, having a great time.

Bottom line - except for rough single track - this bike really will do it all !!

I did a little (very little) dirt while up at the canyon. I was fully loaded and am concerned about the beast vs. bone thing.
I wanted to find a campsite, set up and venture out from there unencumbered by the camping gear.
As it happened, the others I met there had different plans. I acquiesced.

The trip was my first out west on a bike. I have a feeling it won't be the last. Now I know the lay of the land next time I'll do the original plan with or without whoever comes with.

Btw- I absolutely fell in love with northern New Mexico! We went to four corners and 160 (I think, don't have my map) eastward. Went to place called Navajo Dam and stayed at Abe's. Good people and great prices for a room!

Glad you had a good trip, Mike. Wish I could've joined you. I could ride west every year and never run out of places to see and things to do. I still haven't ruled out a trip west later in the year........we will see.

Come up and ride sometime.

I don't know how to put a commentary between each pic because the link is not in the message body. Anyone?

So, here's the comments
1) I was sitting on the edge taking pictures - it was a long drop and got the adrenaline going!
2) Mountains north of Flagstaff
3) That big steak house in Amarillo where if you can eat a 72 0z. steak with all the trimmings you get it free. Some guy from Cali was going for it when we were there.

I have more pics but even one of four I put up didn't go through.
