I turn the key on, hit the starter button and the starter cranks and cranks but won’t fire, I turn the key off and immediately to on and it starts. The bike then starts like it should for months then it happens again This has happened 3 times in the last 7 months. Does anyone know what I should look for

I’ve read some reports that the key might not be fully seated into the ON position. Maybe wiggle it a bit before starting to make sure it’s fully clicked into place?

Do you use the kill switch to shut off the bike, or just leave it in 'run' and turn the key off to kill the engine?

Mine is a 13 with about 37,000 miles, fortunately the very annoying no start issue has only happened to me twice but I for sure will keep your very good tip about the possible switch issue in mind if it ever happens again.

I about crapped myself when my 14 ES wouldn't start while I was on a trip this last weekend. Turned the key...nothing. Took me a minute to realize that it was in gear and I still had the kickstand down. ::010::

I never use the kill switch to turn it off, only the key. All the electronics turn on, it just doesn’t start until I turn the switch off then back on then it starts right way. My suspicions lie with the fuel pump, the vacuum in the line not great enough at first or something and it’s not feeding the fuel. The problem is I don’t know how to check it because it starts right way the next try. Because it happens infrequently I’m going to try turning the switch on for 10 to 20 seconds before I hit the starter and see if it stops I don’t know what else to try

As always with these bikes and after turning the key on, we need to let the tach do the full sweep and full pump stop whining before hitting the starter. I'm just going to assume you know that already and are still having this problem.

I agree that it sounds like a pump or injector issue. If it were out of warranty, we could get into checking the pump output and see if the injector holds pressure. But as Fenellg wrote, it's under warranty. That's part of what you paid to get the bike so I'd take it in.

I don't question this, when more experinced guys write this, I just wondered....so when I read this for the first time about 2 weeks ago, I decided to try..
So ever since I just turn key, and move hand to starter button, og hit it....bike starts right up. And pump is still whining, and tach is not " at zero" yet.
Could be because pump is still new, don't know...S10 have only 7000 km on it.
Or just plain luck :)

I saw a video a while back about a rider talking the highlights of a big trip up to Deadhorse, AK on a 2015 Super Tenere, and he said basically the only issue he had was a couple times not letting the tach scroll back to zero and the display turn to normal mode resulted in a hard start. Wait 10 or 15 seconds before trying to start, and we'll hope that solves it.

Just as a suggestion to rule things out, why not try the cheap and easy first, before going on to the more expensive and difficult to diagnose? Start shutting the bike off with the kill switch, before turning the key off. See if your problem re-occurs. If it does not, continue to follow that pattern.

While things are tight and new it ought to start right up, like you wrote. But if the battery is not 100% when the ECU and pump and starter are all trying to draw juice, you can have a problem.

As Checkswrecks wrote, let the electronics do their start-up job before hitting the start switch. Why would you want to start the bike when the system is going through its pre-start check list?
