I had no idea 80 octane fuel was available in Russia or anywhere in the World⁉.. must be like running diesel fuel in a Super T.
It seems you do a great deal of off road riding that’s most likely the reason for premature shock seal failure.. heavy vibration will also effect the transmission seal life. Good riding and good luck.
If you ride out west especially in the higher elevations a lot of times you only have a choice of 85 octane. Sierra1 told me long ago this bike runs fine on 87 unless it's really hot out or loaded down and your flogging it a bit. This has proven true. I was loaded heavy going to Alaska and it was hot. 86°F going north of Fairbanks and hotter in the lower 48. I ran 91 most of the time but sometimes only 85 was available. I didn't notice any difference heavy, running at speed and around 80° but if it climbed nearer to 100 then I would have been a bit more gentle on the throttle. In Maine you shouldn't have a problem running 87.

Another thing that made my decision, there is one bmw dealership in kansas city, one in omaha, one in oklahoma, one in denver, and maybe one in st. louis. There are that many Yamaha dealers in kansas city alone, maybe more. I didn't want to be held hostage to one outfit.

I will say even more, in Uzbekistan gasoline is most likely 76)) On TDM900, in 2017. I drove about 450 km. My motorcycle used 36 liters of gasoline, although it usually took a little more than 22 liters for such a mileage. And the shock absorber is really very small and weak for such a motorcycle and its weight.

Well, parts are cheaper for a Yamaha... but what parts are you replacing? Have to agree with everything that's been said above. The pdf of the reliability says it all. I met someone on my Alaska trip this past summer who was on a 2020 GS1250 Rallye. We've become good friends... while on said trip a problem re-emerged and got so bad he traded it in in Seattle. They gave him $9200 for a 2020 1250 Rallye and charged him full msrp for the new one. It was an electrical problem and it would throw codes and then die. Wait a few seconds alongside the road and it would start up just fine but the frequency was increasing. He had to get back to south Texas across a lot of barren hot country. So he "traded". They tried for two yrs prior to fix it. It started after the bike had 500 miles on it. Hadn't done it in 5 months. I've known some other BMW owners and it's like a little secret but they all say... yeah, trade it in when the warranty expires. Then my uncle who was a diehard BMW fan came one Xmas and wanted to show me a picture of his new girlfriend. Ok...it was a new Goldwing! Say what? Why? His riding buddy had a new K1200 and it ate the oil pump and BMW wouldn't cover it. Not the first time I had heard that BMW is stingy covering warranty problems. The ST is a mule and it goes. I don't think I have read or heard of any mention on this forum about major problems with the ST. You want reliability, easy maintenance, availability of dealers wherever you are... then I would by the ST. Will you be in the popular clique? No, but run silent, run deep!
Well said !

The main reason some of the higher altitude areas have 85 octane instead of 87 is because at higher altitudes 85 octane burns better and provides the same horsepower as 87 octane, it’s very common to actually get better mpg with fuel injection at altitude.

I hear what y'all are saying and I appreciate the responses about fuel but I guess I don't understand why the Yamaha engineers who developed this fine machine would specify "premium unleaded gasoline only...91 min pump octane" if lower octane fuels were acceptable. Doesn't make much sense to me. I guess I'm a "by the book" kinda guy. Interesting discussion though and always good to hear different viewpoints.

I would say that Yamaha had no other choice but to recommend 91 octane only. Like others have said in severe conditions it will ping under hard Excelleration, or under stress. [with low grade fuel]
I have a lot of miles [over 347,500 ] on a 2012 and almost always use 87 octane 10% ethanol. But if I know that I will be putting it under stress I put in better fuel.

Good point. Does your 2012 model owners manual also specify "premium unleaded gasoline only" like my 2023 model?

I should also add-- I also have a 2017 Tenere and I have always thought that it will ping easier than the 12. But it is almost always loaded heavier with my wife and luggage on . I usually run better fuel in it than the 12.

Whatever the extra cost for premium fuel (as long as it is available) per gallon is over the lesser grade fuel per gallon
it is always what gets pumped into my tank....

I agree… when I know I’m going to ride in an area, like Cape Brenton on the Northern coastal tip of Nova Scotia, where very few stations carry 91 fuel I stop early and do blend of regular fuel mixed w the premium. When forced to run 87 octane I also limit full throttle acceleration when possible. A normal fill up of about 5 gallons 91 octane is only a few bucks more on the card.
