I am gradually learning to "trust" the ABS and the traction control. Went up Colorado 430 near Big Meadows Reservoir today, 14 miles each way, and toward end of ride I was "getting" how to stand on pegs, keep weight centered over bike and not be afraid to gas it going around curves. Amazing how the traction control kicks in and just lets you do a controlled exit. I also came upon some drainage ditches cut across the dirt road in many places, some of them surprising me, had to brake suddenly, and the ABS did it's job so well it is amazing. Hard for an old timer to trust especially the front ABS to keep bike from sliding out, but it did it!!!! Most fun I have had in years. ::013::
Many thanks to so many posts I have read on this forum that helped me make some great progress. ::)

I try to just ignore the ABS and traction control, but find it difficult to do when the crap kicks in. My only complaint of a stock 2012 is these two items, don't need risers, seat mods, don't care about the pwer restrictions, but the ABS and traction control should be sent back to China or whatever country invented the retarded crap.

Ha, just try it, you will be amazed. Just find a dirt area, roll along at a slow speed and jam your front brake on hard. You will NOT slide out.
I can't imagine not liking that kind of protection.
Saved my bacon many times today on that 28 mile dirt road ride!

Had to ride my Tenere a couple hundred feet through 6 inches of snow once , had to help a little by pushing with my feet all the way, rear wheel just kept spinning, the only different thing I noticed was the ABS light stayed on until through the snow.
Rode up Atigun pass in Alaska this past June, it's a very steep gravel road, it was raining and I started spinning a couple times, again I don't know if the traction control actually did anything but I was very great full when we made it to the top. If the ABS light came on that time I never noticed it.

ABS or TCS light? ABS light shouldn't be coming on unless there's a problem.

If your rear wheel free spins (i.e. slipping in snow/ice) for around 5 seconds it disables the ABS and the light comes on. I've put my bike on the center stand and ran it in gear to do this on purpose. Turning the ignition key off and back on again resets this.

You can turn off the TC easily, and put an ABS Off switch in pretty easily too. I have an ABS Off switch, and turn both those things off every time I hit dirt.

Understood, but if it were the ABS light it would have stayed on until the ignition key was cycled and wound not have turned off by itself after he got through the snow. The description made it sound as if once through the snow the light went back off.

My bike doesn't have ABS anymore but it is a very safe thing to have. I do miss it. Especially when my wife is on with me.
A guy right up the street here has always rode a HD and just picked up an 03 FJR [I don't think they had ABS]
He was on a bike trip in Calf. when the car in front of him hit a deer.
He grabbed a hand full of front brake and the bike went right down, he said he must have slid for a block. Lost some skin.

Is there a traction control warning light that's the same color as the ABS light ? I thought it was the ABS light that came on but maybe it was something else, when I got back on clear road the light went off all by itself.

Yeah I think they are both yellow but the traction control light is the letters "TCS" whereas the ABS warning is a symbol.
