"The absolute pinnacle of luxury sport touring riding" complete with chain drive ::025:: Nothing wrong with chains if your into that kind of thing. I hear the MCS from Bosch is legit.

I was thinking the same thing about more hps.. but I think this line in their ad explains it; "the absolute pinnacle of luxury sport touring riding.”

I don't see KTM embracing shaft drive anytime soon. It's just not in their DNA. If you don't mind living with a chain however, the new Super Adventure should be everyhting it's touted as being.

Now all we need is for BMW to come out with its Super GS. Then all the big boys will be Super.

1290cc? Even MORE horsepower you can't use off road. I guess I'm just getting old. Horsepower isn't quite the intoxicant it used to be for me. I'd like to think I could use a bazillion hp off road but the fact is, I can't. Even on road, the Tenere will hustle right along. My buddy has a KTM 1190 ADV R and it is a VERY nice bike. I'm sure the 1290 will be superb as well, as a street bike.

I've had fun with my little KTM off road though. No TCS, no ABS...just old school "feel." I will say, properly taking care of a chain on an off road bike is a PITA, imho. 8)

Let's see if it has the same leaky airbox the 1190 has.
And I'm sure it's good for even more rider felt heat than the 1190.
I'd be interested in a ride on one but man is she gonna be higher maintenance and harder to live with than our Teneres.

90 HP scampering down the road or trail beats 140 HP that are parked or in a truck bed every time. :)

A couple friends have the new 1190's and wish they had picked up a 990 baja instead. The 1190 will cook your nuts on a warm day and they don't turn too great on the pavement. Not much better off road. Not seeing a better overall bike with 100 more cc's. Regarding the chain drive? One benefit is being able to change gearing to suit you which IMO is pretty useful. The S Ten has a ridiculously high first gear and a sixth gear that feels like a 5th gear IMHO.

The magazines will rave about it like the have about the 1290 Super Moto. But the magazines usually only keep bikes for 200 or so miles. A chain drive with a good auto oiler is nothing to be afraid of. Still mess though.

I agree Tippo modern chains are great compared to what they use to be. I was amused them calling it the pinnacle of luxury. Chains are not the pinnacle of luxury ::025:: given the opportunity I'd rent one in a heartbeat.
