I have an opportunity to purchase a 2014 S10 with 1 mile on it. Sounds great BUT I was wondering about buying a bike that has sat for maybe 2 years and wasn't even prep'd when bought. Should I be seriously worried about seals, fluids etc..???

Any and all advice on what to look out for would be appreciated!

It is not at a dealer? ??? Somebody bought a Tenere, and never rode it?! Obviously the gas in the system will be bad; don't know about the other stuff.

Is it still crated?

My dad bought a brand new in the crate, 2 year old gold wing for a steal. He went to the dealership while they were uncrating it, they put the front end together and added fluids. Brand spanking New like it had just came off the line. 8 years later and I believe 100k no problems.

It depends on the price, I wouldn't pay a premium price as if it was new though. I wouldn't worry too much about it not being used, you could change out the oils if you wanted too but I'd wait for the 600 mile service

Should be priced DOWN considerably. If so, might be a good dealI. If it has had fluids installed I'd want them ALL changed out (brake, coolant, oil),. If it's never had them installed it basically should be "new" ..Good luck!

I wouldn't worry too much about seals and stuff. The tires are 3 yrs old though. Depending on where the bike has been sitting, make sure they're not too dry or cracked. UV (even from fluorescent lites) will dry out tires after awhile.

I bought a new 2013 last October. Had about 100 miles on it (dealer demo). Full new warranty. Sold as new. In the 8 months I've had it, I've put 9,500 miles on it (on and off road), and getting ready to mount my 3rd set of tires on it. Not a single problem with the bike. If you can get a deal, I'd say go for it and don't look back.

Shouldn't be a problem at all, especially if kept in the crate. I'd just press for the best price and them to warranty the battery for at least a year.

That said, some dealers don't move bikes because they just won't price realistically. They're typically the smaller Mom & Pop dealers who have a region all to themselves, and they are becoming a thing of the past.

Bought a new 2013 in Oct of 2015. Was a created bike and had NO problems in 1.5 years and 10k+ miles.
The stock tires sucked , so they got replaced early.
Really didnt want a bike that had been preped and sat on someones showroom for two years.

Good luck with the bike, report back and let us know how much you like it . ::004::

Like to know the story on this. Even with 1 mile, if it has been sold and registered it is a USED bike with no warranty. Somebodies gonna take a hit!!!

Cheers, Tim

If you are saying it hasn't been prepped, it sounds like it is still in the crate and has never been set up. They all come with all the fluids already in them from the factory, so no worries about fluids being installed. They also show a small amount of mileage and I think that is because of test running at the end of the production line. The entire bike, including battery will start the warranty period the day it is registered thru Yamaha USA. I would have no problems buying such a bike.

Yeah, I'm kind of confused. He said it wasn't prepped, but he also said "when bought". I did not get the impression that it was at a dealer; wouldn't be the first time I was wrong though.

It's a bid strange because the said it hadn't been prep'd but it is not in the crate and is being sold on consignment. I'm def going to have to get more info from the dealer.

Sounds like somebody backed out of a purchase or it got caught in a legal issue, such as a dealer that closed. Still shouldn't be an issue IF IT WAS NOT TITLED, since Fred is right in that the warranty begins upon sale.

Starting to sound a bit like a scam. I'd want to see the bike in the flesh before putting any money down. Get the VIN and get it checked. Run it through a YAMAHA dealer to see if the warranty was ever registered.

TOO MANY SCAMMERS OUT THERE.

I could be wrong but better to be cautious than burned!!!

Good luck, let us know how you make out

Cheers, Tim

My 2012 was sitting in some showroom in Australia. manuf year 2011. No Aussies wanted the poor thing. So some dealer from Malaysia bought it and I am the 1st owner of a brand new bike, bought in 2015. Tires were made in 2010. All together 4 years sitting.

Issues found: None. No leaks whatsoever. Front tire eventually started showing signs of cracks sometime in late 2016, very minor. I had it changed in March 2017 right before a major trip, and I had put it 11k km on it. Metzeler Tourance EXP. Rear is still good, so will wear it out normally. Even the battery is still good till today.

The very first thing I did to the bike was to run it hard Motoman style, then go for a oil change. I am pleased to say, the bike doesn't consume oil (10W40) after the 1400km trip recently. (Mileage was 11k km before the trip) I did find some traces of oil in the air box (very little), which I believe comes from the crankcase vent, which I never noticed before for the 1st 10k km (because I haven't rode at a maintained speed of 130 to 160kph for hours). I also noticed traces of oil at the throttle body barbs when I was TB sync'ing. I cleaned it with Carb cleaner, shoot into the barbs to clear up any grime.

Oil change, measured 3.4L or 3.6 Quart of new oil. Drain out all oil from the 2 drain holes, change filter. Pour in 3.4L and done. This dry sump thing has a magical show on the sight glass.

I had the clutch and brake fluids and coolant changed at 10k km. Brake fluid was amber which had me concerned that it is old and no good but it is untrue (there are DOT4 amber fluids available), as it never gave me any issues. But changed it anyway ASAP if you can because of the nature of the fluid to absorb O2 and deteriorate over time. I dare not touch the brake fluids because of the ABS system which I wasn't familiar with and I don't trust workshop mechanics with it (ABS system and also they don't quickly wipe off the leaked fluids off painted parts). some research allowed me to cast away all fears and a DIY sorted it out. Just remember to Cycle the ABS pump via a certain procedure, and then change fluids one last time.

Don't have to worry about lubing the chain. I had the pumpkin oil changed twice, first at 1k km with a mineral gear oil, and at 2500km, with fully synthetic gear oil, API GL5. Does makes the pumpkin quieter.

In reading this again, I think we have a "failure to communicate" as they say and that is primarily, I believe from the statement about it not being prepped when sold. I'm not sure what the OP meant by that. I have set up hundreds of Yamahas and Hondas and the process includes documentation that the setup person and then the service manager or his rep sign. As far as the setup person's responsibilities the forms from both Yamaha and Honda have checklists that are checked off and the form is signed in 2 places certifying that the steps and checks have been completed. The first part deals with the assembly and prestart checks. The second part is after a test ride, where you certify that you have ridden it and all systems are functioning properly. Neither specify how far the test ride is, but the 1 mile registered on this bike sounds like in addition to the small amount registered on the production line, it was ridden for the after start checkout for a short distance and thus you have 1 mile on the odo. Perhaps the statement about it not being prepped when sold is that the service manager has not checked his part of the form certifying that the setup was complete or most likely it is just a case of semantics. In either case, I would have no problem buying such a bike and as stated, the warranty does not start until the dealer registers it with Yamaha that it has been sold.
