I’m picking up a 2013 S10 this week as my first ADV bike, is there anything I should look for?
Unfortunately it’s coming from a bike lot so I can’t ask the owner questions.
I’ve been looking at the Tigers, and Africa T but this Tenere is the best price but it has 46k miles on it.

The Cam Chain Tensioner (CCT) on Gen1 models , pre 2014, were known to be potentially problematic. At your mileage I’d be thinking about changing it, especially if there’s a chain rattle on start up, that disappears soon after. You can check if yours has been upgraded by looking at the face of the unit………23p on the face = old, 2BS = new and updated. You only need a torch to inspect, no parts need to be removed.
Deep rumble and vibration is the clutch basket, easy but fairly expensive change over to a Gen 2 basket solves this. Note - not all bikes seem to suffer this and it’s not actually a fault, just makes the bike not nice to ride.
Other than that, nothing…..just general maintenance.

welcome and good luck with the bike.

At 45,000 miles the right rear wheel bearing went bad on my 2013 Tenere, bearing kit from Yamaha was on back order so I had to get them from All Balls, spent a week in a motel in Missoula Montana, that was definitely the most expensive motorcycle break down I ever experienced in over 900,000 miles of riding, at 50,000 miles I traded it in on a new 2018 ES in order to get cruise control.

Welcome, from Texas. Yeah, the mileage itself is not an issue. How it was serviced in that mileage could be. Plenty of bikes on here with over 100k miles. One has over 350k miles.

Good info. I’ll run out at lunch tomorrow for a test ride as long as the tires don’t melt to the pavement .
If the cam sounds good on startup and the clutch seems to be in order I’ll pay for it and pick it up this weekend.

So the clutch basket would make a rattle. Is this at idle or at certain speeds?

3000 to 3500 rpm under load you will likely feel the clutch basket shudder. My 2013 did it from early miles on. I viewed it as more of an irritation than impending doom. Up to you to decide if it’s bad enough to worry about or fix.

Some say it’s around 3-4K rpm. I changed mine at 20k miles. Can’t say it really needed it though.

Cool. I just found a video from 4 years ago. Was about $600 then so not a deal killer. So looks like theirs and the cam tensioner aren’t too bad if they go later.

Mine started buzzing at 2800 and went through about 3400. IMO you have to be one tolerant son of a biscuit to tolerate that kind of engine vibration. First thang I did to mine was swap out the basket for a 2014 and put in Barnett parts. Been rock solid ever since.

My 2013 also had a recall on a wiring harness.

Is it possible to tell by this video if it has slack in the cam chain? Seems like I hear a sliding metal sound in the background but I'm not sure I can tell.

Mine was like this. I think clutch chudder describes it well. I hated it and it was ruining ownership for me. Swapped to the upgraded basket, the bike is now a joy to ride.
