I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but.....I plan on riding to AltRiders 2013 Taste of Dakar in February. There doesn't seem like there will be a place to have tires mounted without adding another 1/2 day to the trip. So I'll be riding about 2500 miles to get there on a new set of tires. Question is this what are the opinions of tires that will get me there, still have enough meat to get me in the desert and then enough to get me home. I'm thinking either the Heidenau K60 or the Continental Twinduro TKC80.

The K60s will square off, but do last a LONG time, especially for the tread. At least if not powering through gravel. I'm at 14,000 miles and don't plan on changing soon.

See ya there!!!!! I'm doing it as well. Did it last year and it is NOT to be missed!!!

Couple things;

From where are you coming?

No, there is no where near to do a tire swap. Pahrump would be the closest and this would be limited.

Having done this ride and ridden the terrain they have laid out for us, I would recommend riding in on whatever you have on now and then swap there or somewhere near.

I offer up my place (Sacramento) for you to stop over. We can put rubber on there and ride down. Once done you can either ride home or back to my place to swap back.

I ran on Metzeler Karoo (not the T) and most everyone else was on TKCs.

Go to Jimmy Lewis' website and read his tire recommendation section.

Yes, the K60 will work but it will not allow you to fully enjoy the terrain and ride. There is a bunch of soft sections that really need a much more dedicated tire than the K60 provides.

Just my opinion, having been there and done that. Of course, many may chime in and offer alternatives but, IMO, you are going to want the best off road tire you can get for this terrain.

Regardless, if it works out, you can use my place as a stopover.

Maybe if you contact Jeremy or whomever at ALtRider, they would help provide a tire or changing help once you get there. Just an idea.
