Been looking for a red 15 S10 for awhile with a $9500 budget. They're around, just haven't found one close. Anyway, came across a white 13 for $6K. Have been focused on a 14+, but man that seems cheap. Seriously considering the 13.

Who has owned both Gen's and what's your thoughts?

Is the red 2015 an ES or Standard? I have a 2015 ES and like it very much. No regrets.

I had a 2012 and it was OK but never enjoyed it as much as I as the 2015 ES. Changed the front and rear suspension and was not happy. Engine blew up under warranty so I traded it in on the 2015 ES.

A good friend has a 2013 that he likes very much and had no problems with. He has long traveled 2up and rides the Eastern Sierra fast and on the edges. He has not changed the suspension.

Didn't think so....wasn't sure. That would decide it for me. Never thought I would use/love cruise so much. It's a little like crack....once you're hooked.... ::025::

I had a 2012. Now have a 2015.
I like the 2015 much better! As far as deciding between the 2 bikes you are considering......Depends on the mileage of each bike. That's a $3500k difference. Depends on how you like to ride. The 2015 does have noticeably more power. How much does that matter?
And yes, the cruise control! For the $3500k difference; you can easily add it. This is my first bike with cruise control. I recently rode a 1200 mile day. NO way I could've done it without the cruise control!

Its a no brainer my friend, go for the 2015... Cruise Control is something you should experience and you will never want another bike without it

I don't have a gen 2, but from what bike are you moving to the S-10?

I rode BMW airheads for 33 years before moving to the S-10 (white 2013 Gen 1). wow. BIG difference. i went Penske shock, traxxion dynamics fork, and I can't imagine a better ADV bike, and am completely happy. That dealer had a 2014, but the 2013 was such a smoking deal that i never looked at the Gen 2, let alone rode it.

$3,500 is a lot of dough - 1/2 of that could be used to acquire incredible suspension, and you're still money ahead.

The step from the airheads to the S-10 was huge. What you're riding now will affect your perception of what you ride next.

I have owned a 2012, two 2013s, and a recently acquired 2015......and still own the 2013 + the 2015. I would never had purchased the '15 if the '13 had factory cruise control that works wonders for my older hands. I rode the '13 today and it runs great.

On your way to everywhere, , Iowa
I have both bikes, 2012 and the 2017.
I would get the +2014
It's not just the cruise that makes it better. There is so many little updates that all add up to a much nicer bike.
I still ride my 2012 everyday and it's great, very smooth, electronic cruise, If it has less power than the 2017 it's not much.[unless your in stock T mode on the 2012] stock suspension that works very good, If I was taking off for Alaska solo today I would be on the 2012, Two up I'd be on the 2017.
I like my 2012 enough that I just can't get enough of it, BUT if I was buying new I wouldn't think of getting anything but +14, And I did, 2017 BLUE!

Don't waste your money on a Gen 1 when the Gen 2s are so much better. I've owned both and ride aggressively. Big differences, all better on the Gen2s. Too many differences to list.

I've put 100k+ on a '12 and currently have 11k on my '15. If I was buying now, I'd probably go for the Gen II, having experienced both, but $9500 is a tough price point for a Gen II right now.

The Gen I bikes are not quite as smooth, but otherwise not that different. I upgraded my suspension after 100k, so I just moved that strait over to the Gen II bike. The Gen I bikes need the new cam chain tensioner before 50k if it hasn't been changed already. That's a part that was superseded, not just changed, so only one CCT is in the parts system. The clutch changes on the other hand, do make a difference and are not superseded parts, but rather new parts listed for the '14 on bikes. The earlier bikes retrofit perfectly, but the parts for the '12/13 are still in the system, so you have to order parts for a '14-on bike to do that modification.

As others have said, the factory CC is very nice and well integrated. I use it all the time. I had a throttle lock on the '12 and used that a lot too, but the CC is sure nicer. I didn't think the stock suspension was bad on the '12, just under sprung for riders north of 200 pounds. Especially traveling with a load or two up. A spring cost me $100, so it wasn't that big a deal.

You could spend $500 on a Gen I bike and be pretty darn happy with it. You could spend the additional $1500 or so on suspension and perhaps be happier than on the Gen II, but it would never be quite as smooth as the Gen II bikes. Both bikes get smoother over the first 5-6k miles. It's really noticeable on the Gen I though.

$10,500 for a 200 mile 15 ES with YES until 2020 a good deal?
Yes! I paid $11k for a non-ES '15 still under original warranty with 3k. You'd be getting the ES for less, lower miles and the extended warranty which is transferable so saves you the $400 of buying it yourself. Score.
