I run 90% of the time between 3-4,000rpms . . . .
Yup, that's the key.
. . . . Wind resistance is a killer . . . .
This past year has been extra windy, even the weather guy said so. Into the wind I've had the mileage drop into the upper 20s. With the wind, upper 70s. I mean, it's not like she's aerodynamic even without the boxes. I can see what part of the boxes are in the wind by where the dead bugs are on them.

I do most of my riding right at 4k but i give the bike an Italian tune up once per ride for sure to blast the carbon buildup off the valves.

When I can, I fill to the brim. That said, I've gotten as much as 105 miles before the first bar disappeared. That was modest 40-60 mph speed limit on backroads. Normally, the first bar drops between 75-85 into a typical ride.

Yes, my 50 liter panniers sure don't help my aerodynamics! The outer 4" or so kill a lot of bugs. At 75 I am at 27 to 28. 85 mph 23 to 25. This is fully loaded up with spare tires and 2 gallons of gas where the pillion should be along with dry bags on the panniers. But drop down to 55 and it goes up a lot.
