HP is what sells. It's all about bragging rights. I'm perfectly happy with my 90ish HP Tenere. Plenty there for me to have fun on.

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

just think of the wheels spin on gravel.
the good news is that you will be changing tires ever 2 000 km!

like JC said: POWERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

As if it's not bad enough that the 1290 adventure has airbox issues ( Something to do with the air filter not handling/trapping all the debris, in turn ruining the motor), they come out with this.

Sounds fun...good to have for passing, off road, not so much.

It was a very tough decision at the time but I'm sure glad I chose the '14 S10ES over the KTM. First and most importantly it has become my favorite bike. I just smile every time I ride it. Secondly my fears about the KTM seem to have proven true.

She is an interesting machine. For some reason the S10 makes a horrible first impression with many people, but most say she grows on you. I'm at three years ownership come the first week of January and my ODO is at 29,500 miles as of today. Besides farkles, the only thing I have done to here maintenance wise is replace rear brakes, replace plugs, and change the motor and final drive fluid. She runs like a champ, and continues to impress me. I still smile every time i get to ride the S10.

Interesting to read. I "almost" regretted my decision on the S10, because I mostly like to ride off-road (Not dirtbike and not KLR territory). I'm not into IronButt rides, Not into "touring".. so reading the magazine reviews that the KTM is probably the most "dirt-worthy" ADV bike. I thought maybe I should have looked at that.

But above being "dirt-worthy" I value reliability far above that. Which the S10 is. So hearing that the KTM has issues, reassures me about me decision... I don't need to be stuck at the top of Cinnamon Pass with a broken machine....

If I get another bike with 150hp + then it will certainly not be an adventure style bike!! There is a reason the Hayabusa looks the way it does (ugly, but aerodynamically proven), when you squeeze the near 200hp out on a long straight road (closed circuit of course) you want the front end to stay planted and the wheels kissing the tarmac. The KTM 1290 with 180hp will sell of course, to those that want to say the own one, but pretty useless. Tops you want a bike that is dirt oriented is 100hp even if it does /will have different ECU maps. Just my view.

I pretty much agree, I think it "would be a blast"... and then I remind myself that at the end of an all day off road ride, my (only) 105HP machine is pulling my arms out of there sockets and im beat tired... If I ever need more "power" I just open the throttle to about 5-6K and switch up another gear off road. It once again reminded me last week in Arkansas riding off road up a steep dirt road, it was hard to keep the front tire down, and the rear wheel hooked up... (S/off) And as I've done, and said before, this bike will take you 100 + Mph off road if you want !
150-180 HP might be good racing the Paris Dakar but not for what I do.... Not a hater, its a bad ass bike, I would take one, but I don't think I would ever come close to ever using the power and reliability where I ride is critical.. If a customer ever offers a ride, Ill throw a leg over !

I wonder if the exec that declined the use of the KTM for the "Long Way" movies ever regrets his mistake. :D And to think of what could have been....

Great bikes and I'm happy to see them moving up in the market and releasing new models. :)

LOL. Yes, I think that may have been a "career limiting" move! ::013::

Back then it would have been the 950 KTM, which would probably have fared ok.
keep in mind that Char-Ian and co were riding 1150's that were heavily overloaded (they took the kitchen sinks c/w countertops)

They only really broke the sub frames, and blew up shocks at an alarming rate.

Oddly enough, BIKE UK are riding a brand new barely prepared VSTROM 1000 from the UK to Japan. Unassited, to date, the only failures were a fuel pump (shit fuel clogged the filter) and a rear shock failure.

It's not if, it's when, and that will be as soon as I can get my hands on the new R1 released today. That's what 200hp should look like!
