I know that there have been numerous Super Teneres that have reached the 100,000 mile threshold and probably a few in the +200K category so mine is not unique in any way. Years ago when I bought my 2003 V-Strom 1000 I was probably the first to reach that threshold and I started posting the maintenance write-ups over the years/miles because some people wanted to know what my maintenance schedule was, what did I do to it and how often, what broke, etc So this is the first S10 writeup on my 2014 non-ES S10.

I bought the bike from Tom "3Putt" on Oct 27, 2016 with 9248 miles, he was the second owner, I am the third. Basically it is stock with Givi crash guards, Hepco Becker top case and panniers. I have added a Russell Day Long seat, two sets of LED aux lights, a 5.25 gallon aux tank for rallys/LD riding (from Ernie Azevedo eazcycle.com), a V-Stream medium windshield for winter riding, Rox risers, stiffer fork springs and Penske 8983 shock both from Traxxion Dynamics in Woodstock GA. I still need to purchase a good bash plate and different luggage for off- road riding.

Currently the bike has 110,116 miles.

Oil changes- I have performed 12 oil/filter changes. A few of the early changes were using 10x40 Mobil1 synthetic but it's easier for me to purchase Castrol 4T 10x40 synthetic so that's what I use now. I have sent two oil samples to Blackstone Labs for analysis one at 53,347 the other at 95,596, both came back good and clean. I have decided on 8000-9000 mile oil change intervals for now.

Oil Filters- I change the filter along with the oil and I use whatever is at the auto parts store that crosses over. Currently I'm using STP6017A filter. I'm not a fan of K/N oil filters so I will not use those, just my preference.

Air Filter- at 22,111 miles I replaced the stock with K/N washable/resuable filter. Since the bike stays mainly on the tarmac or regular dirt/gravel roads the filter stays quite clean for long periods of time. I've cleaned it 3 times but I check it if I'm under the tank for any reason.

Rear Drive Oil- I replace every 16,000 miles with Castrol 80w90 gear oil. Shaft drive is the major reason why I purchased the S10 instead of another V-Strom.

I had Traxxion service the forks, install stiffer springs, seals, etc and replace the steering head bearings (which were bad) at 101,767 miles.
I replaced the front wheel bearings at 100,184 miles. I will replace the three rear wheel bearings at next tire change.
I replaced the stock shock with a Penske 8983 at 109,889 miles and checked and lubed the shock linkage bearings.

Plugs- I replaced the stock plugs at 64,452 with CR8E1X iridium.
Brake pads- I replaced the front with EBCHH twice at 65,404 and 95,596. I replaced the rear once with Galfer 295 at 95,596.

Tires- I have used 6 fronts and 10 rears. I think I have settled on the Tourance as the tires I like the best but I have used as few Anakee3 as well. I run 36F/41R tire pressure. When I go serious off road I'll throw on the Mitas ME07.

I have not performed a valve check yet nor replaced any other fluids, stock battery is still in use (probably need to replace). I lost track of how many H7 bulbs headlight I have replaced (5,6,7??), I know I need to get LEDs.

So far no issues except regular servicing. The bike runs well, I'm not too picky. It has the low rpm stumble, sensitive throttle, no leaks, gets good gas mileage (I usually use 87 octane but use higher octane gas at times) and overall does everything quite well as most S10 riders will attest.

Congrats on racking up the mileage. Also good to see someone using an old Streetpilot

The pic is from Feb 2017 when I installed the aux tank on. I buy used Streetpilots off the web for $10 or so :) I rally route using Basecamp and Mapsource and use a Zumo 350 along with 27xx or 28xx model Streepilots. The other two holders are for Gen1 Spot and iphone

Hi Kith, I've followed your thorough write-ups on Stromtroopers and now on here. I too went from a DL1000 to a Super Tenere, and I couldn't be happier. Not only did you inspire me to ride because your mileage is incredible but also gave me piece of mind that with routine maintenance both of these motorcycles are extremely reliable. Keep the shiny side up and keep us posted with write-ups as your mileage increases. If you don't mind?;) Thanks again, Tom

Thanks for posting this info Kith. Good info to digest and learn from. I know I could definitely let my oil intervals grow longer and it's good to hear your concrete evidence to support as such. I realize your situation is a bit different than most around here as your bike rarely sits, but good to hear the S10 has been a reliable steed for you.
Thanks!

Thanks - nice write up! No change of brake fluid or anti - freeze? Now I'm feeling OCD with mine!

I'm up in Canton and had Traxxion do my (old) FJR - nice people and good shop, best of luck. I plan on hitting the 100K mark also....but will be a few years....

Wait, just did the math....you did 100,000 miles in about 26 months = 3,850 per month - WOW.

100,000 miles in about 26 months
while it may be more than some, its by no means anywhere near the most. In 2017 my friend Andy A. rode his H-D +103,000 miles in less than 12 months!! to earn the IBA 100K in a year award, only a few people have ridden and documented such a feat. (of course he's retired :))

You're actually still on the battery that came with the bike?? That has to be a record of some kind.
Not really. My 2014 ES still is on the factory battery. Getting weaker but still starts when under 45 degrees.

My 2013 still has the factory battery with 125K miles. Camped this weekend, after stopping for the day charged my phone, GPS and Bluetooth comm, next morning bike started in 35° temp w/ 15W50 oil.

Do you keep the battery on a trickle charger on the few days you’re not riding?

My Dad had good luck with life of batteries doing that.

I do not, not ever. I've let the bike sit for 3 months a couple times. Thinking I should charge it before attempting to start I attached the battery tender and it showed fully charged in less than 10 minutes. Just last week it started after a 5 week sit. I measured the battery before trying and it was 12.6 volts. Then load tested while cranking and lowest voltage before starting was 10.5 volts. Even a brand new battery will drop to 11 volts.

Only once in the battery's early on life did I let it discharge very low by leaving key/lights on after turning off with the kill switch.

I've heard some even say that continuous use of a battery tender is not the best for an AGM battery. Standard lead acid battery is another story though.

Congratulations sir! Good job!! It just goes to show how reliable the Japanese bikes are even with piss poor maintenance . No valve checks, no plug changes until after 60,000 miles, fork and shock service at over 100,000 miles, etc.

I personally would never beat and trash any my bikes like that. OTOH, it's your bike and and you are proving you can just ride it for miles on end without being left stranded.

All my bikes live on a battery tender when not being ridden. I plug them in when they are parked at home. Even when commuting.
