Maybe you brighter kids can help me figure out why Yamaha put a 1/2 in. crossbar just above the new digital dashboard. I bought a new 6 in. Garmin Nuvi 65 and tried to mount it on the bar so the unit was more inline with my line of sight. I tried 3 different mounts, built it up with tape, then tape and PVC pipe, but ll slipped downwards due to vibration, poor grip and weight of the unit. Most of the mounts are designed for 7/8 or 1 in. dia. bars. So I moved tbe i installation to the center of tbe handlebar. Bingo. Far less vibration. Solid. Doesn't move unless I want it to. Am very happy with this new GPS device. It even talks! I had to purchase separately a Central America SD map chip, which is pretty spot on. Yes, I know it's not waterproof, but it sure is a big screen. A zip-lock Baggie suffices when rain approaches.

Back to my question. Why a cross bar of only 1/2 in. width? Just curious.

Thanks,
Scott Williams

If I am not mistaken the 1/2" crossbar works with most touratech gps mounts and such but not with many of the other mounts. I have know idea why Yamaha would choose one size over the other

RAM mount comes with a bushing for the 1/2 bar, and you can cinch it down with a wrench
this is good info. I figured I would have to make one

Can sure appreciate your comments on the vibration of the new mount. Specifically with the windscreen in it's highest position. It's one of very few complaints I have with the 2014. I prefer the heads-up positioning of the stock mounting bar and chose to leave my unit mounted there and "suffer" the vibration.

Yeah, the accessory bar is garbage. It shakes a LOT with my Garmin or Passport. Something was going to break. I put ram mount balls on the handlebar clamps, now it's great. It's like they never even mounted anything on it.

:Hi Guys,
When I had my Garmin Nuvi 65 mounted on the 1/2 in. crossbar, it vibrated noticeably. Now that it is mounted on the center of the handlebar, it is rock solid. No vibration. Just have to glance down a bit. But on the bright side....it talks! No going back to the crossbar for me. Happy now.
Cheers,
Scott
