    R1200GS pricing

My good friend is in the process of deciding whether she wants a R1200GS or a Super Tenere. As you may have assumed, I am encouraging her to pick up a Super Tenere. Yesterday while on the web, she, her husband, and I looked at the BMW website and built a R1200GS to the spec that she'd like...

    Super Tenere maintenance

My local dealership has a very small service department, and is very difficult to schedule service into. I am somewhat of a mechanical neophyte, and so I am wondering .. if I changed my engine oil and FD oil, and changed my tires, and did nothing else until the 24k mile service, at which point...

    Mandatory recall coming: Hard start

Overnight, I exchanged emails with the powerplant engineer that I have been dealing with at Yamaha Japan. He has confirmed that there's a pending recall that will cover 2012 - 2015 Super Tenere's (2016 is excluded, and for now, only USA models) and is to be issued Feb 1. The recall is for the...

2016 Super Tenere - First impressions

I've had my 2016 Super Tenere for just about a month now, and have put 1,000 miles on it. First impression, it's wonderful. As some may recall, Yamaha told me that the 2016's have a fix for the "hard start" problem, and that seems to be correct. I've tried to get it to hard start many times...

    Am I crazy for considering a R1200GS?

I am considering a R1200GS just for something different, and because I can get support easier here in Hawaii. So I now ask you, am I foolish for considering a BMW R1200GS? Are they as unreliable as they sound? Are they as expensive to maintain as they sound to be? Any and ALL feedback welcomed...

Hard start fix coming from Yamaha

I have been told by the factory that Yamaha is aware of the hard start issue, and is working on a fix. Yamaha says it is caused by a mixture rich condition caused by a bug in the ECU. In early 2016, Yamaha is supposedly coming out with an ECU software fix that will remedy the issue. In the...

Super Tenere caught on fire today

I am very sad to report, today my Super Tenure caught on fire, and I believe is a total loss. I had a hard start episode while running errands. I held the throttle wide open and cranked. I'd estimate that I cranked for 1 minute continuously. I did smell fuel in the onset of the problem. As I...

Do you do more than change the oil?

Our Super Tenere is coming up on 5,000 miles and is due for an inspection. Unfortunately, the dealer here on the big island will not work on the Super Tenere, saying he has no manuals. Our technical abilities are almost nil. If we do nothing other than change the oil & the shaft drive fluid...

    Dropped the bike!

At the northwest side of the island, we had winds of about 40 MPH this morning. My husband took the bike out, and returned it to our garage with damage to the left side! He was at a stop sign, getting ready to make a left turn when the wind blew from the right, and "leaned," or blew the bike...

My Super Tenere is !(@#&*) awesome!!

Finally today I hit 3,500 miles on my Super Tenere. It feels better and better every time that I take it out for a ride. So awesome. The motorcycle is beyond phenomenal, and meets each and every one of my needs, and then some. It takes THOUSANDS of miles to "get" this motorcycle, in my opinion...

    Income of Super Tenere owners

A fellow rider stopped to talk today, and when he saw my Super Tenere, he commented that it's a good bike for someone who doesn't quite have the income of a BMW rider, but still likes the GS style of bike. His comment made me wonder if there's any reality to what he said at all? I understand...

Final drive AND clutch reservoir leak ... A problem or normal?

I went riding today to the top of the volcano -- 14,000' above the ground. It was quite hot on the ride, and on the way up until about 8000'. During the ride, I noticed that my clutch reservoir was seeping fluid, from the top. I was unable to get a good photo. After arriving back in my garage...

    Show us your tattoo

Tattoos are a big part of the culture here in Hawaii, and so I thought it would be fun to start a tattoo thread. Feel free to post pictures of your tattoo(s), or the tattoos of loved ones. I'll start with one of mine, on my foot.

    Limited maintenance availability

I recently called our Yamaha dealer (the only one on the island) to schedule a service, and was surprised by their response. They told me that they cannot do anything more than an oil change on the Super Tenere, because they have not sent any techs to school on the bike. The problem is...

    Draining oil

Based on the owners manual, it says to put the motorcycle on a level surface to drain the oil. To confirm, oil is changed on the center stand? I have read some folks changing their oil on the side stand. Please verify.

    Hello from Kona, Hawaii

Just purchased a 2013 S10 from Oregon and imported it into Hawaii. We don't have any S10's on the big island that I am aware of. Looking forward to making this great bike even better by adding some accessories! Eyes are peeled for things in the for sale section! First up is a pair of bags, and...

    Price for pre-owned bags

I just bought a 2013 S10 and am looking to buy set of side & tail bags. Including the mounts, what should I expect to pay on the pre-owned market for these?
