Back in the day we Royal Star guys swapped the VMax final drive gears into the bike. We got the lower gears so the bike would pull better, they got the taller gears for the top end. The Tenere final drive sure looks a lot like the Royal/VMax pumpkin. There was a shop back east that did all the set up. I should still have a Max geared final in the garage somewhere, it started leaking so the bike sold with the oem gears. I know exactly where I have a spare V-4, no carbs tho.

One of these? Went riding with my son in law tonight...
Hard to even find the pumpkin. Funny how it sounds like 2 Harleys.

I still think that platform was the best looking machine Yamaha ever built. Mine was a four pipe Tour Classic. Quad Vance & Hines sure put out a growl.

Finally got my new key blanks from the slow boat from China . Took them to the local hardware store to get them cut. They both will only work when inserted one direction but not the other. Just order another set from China and will take them to a real locksmith when I get them.

The headlight caps arrived so I completed the LED conversion, it looks so much better and brings the bike up to date.

I also swapped out the bulbs in my Givi S310 spots, I think I need to check the alignment on one of them! I've now removed the two small LEDs under the headlight as the colour didn't look right.

Looks a bit familiar.
Yesterday I just finished up final wiring and installation on a set of GIVI LED Fog lights mounted on the ALT Rider

Super Tenere uses a hypoid gearset, VMax has spiral bevel gears so no chance of swapping them to get a lower final drive ratio.
What I would like is a wider ratio spread in the 6 speed transmission, 6th is plenty fast enough but a bit slower 1st and 2nd would be better for steep hills and some of the rock trails we were riding in Arizona.

A thousand percent agree, the lower gears are not suitable for off-road use nor lil' corners :(
If someone think of something...

Got a good ride in with my reflashed ECU (courtesy of Anthony) and adjusted suspension. For the suspension I took the front pre-load to 3 lines showing. For the rear, the preload went to nearly full hard. For both compression and rebound on all the shocks, I turned all the way to "A" and then dialed back 6 clicks. Followed guidance from one of the threads here. I may tweak a bit more, but the feeling of the suspension is a bit less harshness and more control in curves, especially when getting some bumps happening in the curves.

Umm, isn't a hypoid gear set by definition a spiral bevel gear? edit: Did some looking. Hypoid pinion gears are very off center of the ring gear's shaft, if projected through the gear set the shaft would bypass the axle shaft. Not sure if there's that kind of offset. I'd have to have both rear ends side by side to see the difference. Doesn't matter in the end, nobody is needing this "issue" fixed.

Squat down and have a look at the Super Tenere pumpkin, you can see the pinion shaft center line passes below the axle center. I believe it is the only motorcycle final drive with hypoid gears, every other bike has the pinion center line intersecting with the ring gear center.

Hi, where did you order these from? I could use a couple spares myself. Thanks!

Just did some little up keep today on the S10.Changed air cleaner, coolant, oil and final drive.Thought about changing plugs but decided to wait when I get valves adjusted.
I changed my own air filter recently at approximately 25,000 km....moderately dirty, not too much oil in their either.
I had to remove the LH SW Motech crash bar and the usual screws etc..
Far far too complicated and arduous to change something as simple as an air filter.
Had I known I would have waited until 40,000 km and changed the air filter, new plugs and have the valves set.
Is it ok to let the plugs run to 40,000 km??

I have the Altrider rear rack and replacement rack for the rear seat. Also have Jesse bags with the 'narrow' option, removing the passenger grab rails. For my month long retirement ride in 2018, I took off the tail bag and made it one long continuous shelf , instead of a raised rear shelf for my Wolfman duffle long-ways, since cross-wise, I could not open the bags! Like this:

When I came back, I raised the rear rack again, got a small Pelican box and attached it to the shelf for my tools, tire repair stuff and pump, then stuffed the rain gear under the shelf in the little cubby, like this:

Decided to go back to a long, continuous shelf and combine everything in one box and discovered the Apache 3800 from Harbor Freight fit perfectly between the two cases, still allowing me to open them! It is a little more than twice as big as the smaller Pelican. It now looks like this:

And my Kreiga 30 L waterproof bag fits perfectly in front of the box and between the cases, still allowing access without removal!

The beauty of this new setup is that on another long trip, if I spend every 4th night or so in a motel, the Kreiga and my tank bag can go into the motel in one trip and everything else is locked and secured on the bike, avoiding two trips out to unload everything!

Now I just need to be able to escape to test it out!
