The agony of growing another year older was tempered by a really cool birthday and unexpected present from my awesome wife.....a Zumo 665! ::013::

I have got it mounted (via Ram mounts and Touratech mounts) in a position that I am pretty happy with, but I need some advice and help with hooking up power, wire routing, and positioning the XM antenna. I have been looking around and have seen some of the posts about wiring in other accessories and that has been helpful, but I would like to see some pics and info on the Zumo 665 specifically. I would like to tie the power into the accessory plug by the tool pouch, ideally.

As a guy who is not especially mechanical, small words and pictures would be helpful!!

THANKS!!!!

I have the "hockey puck" mounted on the brake reservoir with heavy duty (snap) Velcro. My wiring went to a fuse block that I had installed in the tool pouch area. Works great. Now sign up for the Nav weather and Nav traffic...and enjoy!

Thanks for the great info!!!! I like the idea of the posi-taps, seems like a nice clean way to get power to the unit. I am not to the point of adding an entire fuse block yet.

Does anyone have experience mounting the antenna behind the base of the windscreen (near the instrument panel)? I wondered about that, it would keep it out of the way a little more. I like the idea of the rear luggage rack area, but I actually use that area for bags yet. I still have to play with that one a little more.

Thanks again!!!!

I couldn't find a nice flat (horizontal) surface to mount it to in the area I think you are describing. For the best reception it really needs good clear view of the sky. IMHO.

I tried that and was not completely pleased with the reception, or how secure it was. I mounted it behind the panel with the Yamaha logo since the logo panel is only held on by 3 wimpy push-lock fasteners. I ended up putting it on top of my brake master cylinder, secured with the heavy-duty velcro. No problem with reception, or with it coming off.

The manual recommends mounting the puck 30 cm / 11.8" from the GPS unit. See page 8. http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/zumo665_OwnersManual.pdf
The manual also says you can mount the reciever under any non-conductive material. Which implies you could mount it under the rear seat, but that doesn't seem "right" to me. I haven't mounted mine yet. Definitely something I need to work out before I head to Whitehorse next month.

I ran my XM puck at an angle and behind my screen on my R12GS Adventure. Not one problem with reception ever.

I had it mounted on the top of the instrument panel, but it prevented me from dropping my wasp adjuster all the way down and forward. To get around this, I made a little bracket that allows me to put it on the lower crossbar of the wasp bracket. Reception is pretty good, but not the best, probably due to all the bracket/windshield stuff surrounding it.

In my experience on other bikes, it's more important to have a clear view of the sky than to worry about how far it is from the GPS. Just get it at least 4-6 inches away.

How far from the GPS unit is your puck on your GS? I'd really like to mount mine under the windscreen at the nose of the bike, but I am concerned about reception.

It was about 7 or 8 inches away. No more than what my current set up provides. No issues whatsoever.

I use this with the 665 on two different bikes:

http://www.touratech-usa.com/Store/1764/PN-GRAANT/RAM-Antenna-Adapter-Plate

I have it mounted to the back of a Touratech Locking mount, but it also can mount to the back of the stock motorcycle mount. I have the XM Radio, Traffic, and Weather. No problems with any reception or interference even though it is only inches from the GPS. I also have about 800+ MP3 songs loaded and use the Bluetooth phone with the Big Ear earplug speakers and Edsets headset/mic. All work great.

Thanks for all of the great information!! It has really been useful. I am going to use the posi-taps for now, but I need to know what gauge the wires are to get the right ones. Does anyone have that info available? Also, where did you tuck the mic and audio out wires that come on the mount? (Sorry for all the noob questions, just don't want to screw anything up)

While I am picking your brains, another question. What helmet communication is everyone using. I have a Nolan N-102 helmet, but have not been particularly impressed by their Ncom system. I have looked at the Sena systems a little bit, but I just want to get a fell for what other's experiences have been.

Thanks!!!!!!!

I have been using the SENA SMH10's with great success.

I coiled up the excess wiring nice & neat and it sits just above the so-called tool-kit under the right side cowling. Nice & tidy. Being a bit anal, I also put caps over the open connectors to keep debris/water/bugs/ etc out of them.

I am using Scala G4 and would give it mixed reviews for bugs (iPhone, phone use issues) and ease of use (lots of combination button pushing to remember). I understand that there is a new version Scala 9, I think. I will look at it to see if they have fixed some of the issues.

I just got a set of the G9's and am still checking them out. The speakers are definitely better quality. You can still change settings, such as VOX sensitivity via PC as with the G4, but you can also do it via voice control, which can also be used for other things, like starting a MP3 player. I only got mine installed yesterday, so am still learning. What bugs did you have with phone use? My only problem is when I tried to upgrade my bluetooth non smart phone to another non smart phone with bluetooth and found that the only ones ATT offered would stream the phone's MP3 player to my G4, but would not let me answer phone audio. I found a new Nokia on Ebay that worked fine with my G4 and now with my G9. When I talked to the Cardo folks at the Indy Dealer Expo, they said that several of the non smart phones being made now have some issues, but smart phones, especially iphones have been reported to do the best. Older model non smart phones had more features than some of the new ones.

Buttons are the same as the G4. The only button pushing I have had to do with the G4 is when I want to turn on the FM receiver to receive the FM output of my Sirius sat radio. Otherwise VOX works well for intercom use and answering phone calls.

That's great to hear, I just ordered the SENA's. Had the Scala, but it's crapping out after 3 years and 10,000 miles or so.
