Still another reason I wouldn't want to be 23 again. ;) 33 yes, 23, no. I'm stupid enough at 55, certainly don't need to add to that. But if I were a track day guy, one of the Rs would be very enticing. In reality, the middleweights will usually allow faster times for all but the true experts, of which I am not a member. If I were going to do the Tail of the Dragon, I think I'd take a WR250X with the stickiest tires I could find. It will go as fast as those corners truly allow, without the spanking potential of a high powered sportbike. Most people are faster on smaller bikes than bigger ones. If I weren't so lazy (read that as already have enough to do) I'd build one of those Formula 450 bikes and do track days. But I'm already overbooked as it is, so don't need more.
The FZ8 remark was that from all reports, with a centerstand (extra $ accessory) some wind protection and an adjustable shock, it may be the best FZ yet: grunty and fast. Turns better than the FZ1, runs faster than the FZ6, has better bottom end than either of the other two. Very enticing.
+1......totally agree with you on this one yamaguy55!

A bike like a FZ1 isn't really ideal for a road like the Tail of the Dragon. We have several roads around here like the dragon - you're right, a small motard can do well on the super tight slowish stuff. An FZ1 will do a respectable job on the Dragon though. It'll also do much faster roads where the motard has no business at all. And it'll rip the freeway when it has to. The FZ is more of a real world bike. It will do many things well - including humiliating less experienced sport bike riders in the twisties.

I haven't ridden the FZ8, but being that it has a FZ1 engine with a smaller bore and the same stroke, it should be better in every area except peak power.

I had a 2009 naked for 12K miles. Brilliant bit of kit. the 2010 is even sweeter. Avoid the 07's they had fuelling issues in the UK/Europe resulting in a snatchy throttle.

I had Gilles rearsets, full R&G protection kit, Yoshi zorst, Rizoma bars, PCV, K&N, Pazzo's.

Loved that thing .... mad fast and gr8 handling.

I've just brought a 2009 FZ6 as a run about ... hope that lives up to the FZ name.
I currently have an '04 FZ6, the original engine tune when it was still about 100BHP. Other than the flat(ish) low end, it has been an outstanding bike, always works, runs very well. I rode it on a few non-stop ten hour days and it was surprisingly comfortable. Actually, it is more pleasant at 85 mph than at 40. And gets better than 50 mpg doing it. The only changes I've made are a Corbin seat, bar risers, frame sliders (still unused!) and a set of Dunlop Roadsmarts as the current rubber. The original D252s had great grip, and I had several sets, but the Roadsmarts have 95% of the grip and last and last and last. If it warms up enough to do so, I want to try out the 8.

What are the insurace rates for a FZ1 compaired to a R1? Did your step son looking into that or just which bike is cooler, faster.

He did not compare rates before buying. I used to, but anymore just go with what I want and then check on insurance later. I guess that's one nice thing about getting old........

Interesting when he did call around, he ended up with the best rate from AllState. I may check with them when my SuperT arrives.
