I have just over 2,000 Miles on now and at first I thought the GearBox was a little catchy, eckspecially on down shifts. Well today I tried just shifting without the clutch and found that it shifts very smoothly. So now I know it was just me not timing my clutch and throttle together.
Just want to say I have not had another bike that shifted so well without the clutch before.

any bike will shift up smoothly without the clutch, shifting down without it takes some careful rev matching but its actually not too difficult once you get the hang of it but i like using the clutch on downshifts to help me slow down ::008::

I used to think that my FJR had a smooth gearbox, but the SuoerT is even smoother!

The first day I had my Tenere I missed some shifts and the motor stalled a couple of times. By the end of week 1 everything had loosened up and since then no complaints from me. This bike is a lot of fun to ride.

Easiest bike to catch neutral on the downshift I have ever had. Rarely find myself holding the clutch at a stop because I went past neutral and into first.

But overall, I have had slicker gearboxes. Almost EVERY Suzuki I have ever owned was a perfect shifter.

However, no complaints on this Blue tuning fork masterpiece. Fixing to hit 8000 miles and will go full synthetic. I predict it getting even better!

Not as smooth as my FJR short shifting but if you rev it up it's about the same. Downshifting on a down rev in a corner to keep from upsetting the rear works great on this bike. I like it!

No problems or worries ::015::

What amuses me is the how different the impressions of the S10 gear-shifting action. How does nice, short throws with positive engadgemt equal "just as notchy as my GS?" I've ridden both and just don't see the analogy.

27XX miles on the S-10 and the box shifts quite nicely on upshiftts , but downshifts are still quite notchy (maybe "rough" is a better term) IMO. No missed shifts ever, but the "smooth positive feel" just isnt there if you ask me. Downshift feel has improved with mileage (it sucked big time first 1000 miles) and still hoping it improves with more mileage. We shall see. Using Rotella synthetic oil since 1700 miles.

I will say, the S10 gear box is nowhere near as "slick" as any Honda gearbox I've historically or currently own. Crap, even my KTM 950 SE box, which I thought wasnt good, downshifts better than the S10.

Someone a few moons ago was having a whinge about the gearbox and the dealer cleaned and adjusted a couple of things and bingo, smooth as butter again.

Maybe that's what it's all about.

The two I rode were certainly mucho slicko.
Cheers

Yes, I have to agree the downs are not smooth and sometimes I am either not lifting my foot enough or the linkage is sticking. I have had it in the dirt a lot this past week so today I will clean up and loosen the linkage and may also add about an inch to the lever. My feet are just too big.

IL, the land of straight, flat, boring roads
For about the first 1,000 miles I sometimes had problems in downshifting when coming to a stop orcoming into a turn and wanting to downshift several gears. Then I read someone's advice about adjusting the shift lever down a bit and that did the trick for me. Positive downshifts 100% of the time. Perhaps with it up higher I wasn't lifting my foot after dabbing down and it wouldn't allow the linkage to do its thing. In any case, that worked for me.

I'll bet that was it. When I wear my work boots, which are higher profile in the toe area, I have the same problem...only with upshifts. I have to consciously make sure I point my foot downward to release any pressue on the shift lever or I'll never get out of what is usually second gear. With my riding boots on, the shifts are super postive, short strokes and I never miss a gear. I'm think some people are equating the very sure-shifting click, click, chick as she goes through the gears as 'notchy,' which is a misguided description, IMHO.

I had to adjust mine down a bit as well. I was missing some shifts, but now all seems fine after 4K+ miles.

I noticed the smooth shifting way back on the short demo ride I took. Very noticeable difference compared to the 1-2 clunk on dl1000.
My BMW shifted pretty good until it got hot, then it was very clunky.

My S10 shifts smoother than either of my previous bikes and I'm loving it. ::022::

Have any of you change oil weight and noticed a difference in shifting smoothness? What about temperatures affecting shifting smoothness?

I have noticed the shifter not dropping after shifting into 3rd and 4th gear. It could be my boot getting in the way but I am not sure. I have lowered the shifter 5 turns then raised it up 2.5 turns. Personally I would prefer a little bit longer shift lever.

I'm currently running yamalube 10w40 so my comments are with this oil. I have noticed on previous bikes that running synthetic makes shifting a bit clunkier. It's probably due to it's superior flow qualities of synthetic.

Running 10W-40 Mobil 1 full-synthetic right now(for the winter months) and the gearbox is notchy on down-shifts. Very smooth with up-shifts.

I just made mine longer, for my size 13s, It better but I still get stuck going down. I think when I get my off idle boog fixed then I can give a little blip as I normally do on the down shift. This off idle stumble is getting to me. 2000 miles time to fix it. This weekend.

Here is a pic of my Longer Lever.
