Hello,

I need URGENTLY to buy side cases for my ST .

I'm trying to find a configuration with aluminium cases that allows:

A - to place inside an helmet in one of the cases;
B- Supported by side carriers with an easy/quick remove solution - to remove them when I'm not using the side cases.

Givi Trekker Outback line do not provides the condition B.

Sw-Motech side case do not provides the condition A.

So you know any other that that provides both ?

Thanks!!!
Duarte S.

If you search this sub-forum with the word "helmet" you'll find a number of threads which tell people's experiences with helmets in different boxes. If I were to set up my bike new again, I'd probably go with the lockable Holan Nomada top box (my NeoTech fits in it with room to spare) that I have and get Mosko Moto soft side bags.

As for side racks, you can both boxes to nearly anything. I've got an older version of these:

To a degree, what side case fits a helmet depends on the size of your helmet. My 45L Touratech Zega Pro fits my Large LS2 Modular (FF386), helmet. I suspect most 45L or larger side cases will accept an average helmet, though probably not all.

If I understand your B, you want to quickly and easily remove the side carriers themselves, when you're not using the cases. That's a bad idea. What you want is to either go with what CW suggested, a big top case and soft bags mounted to strong pannier brackets that give you rear protection bars when you're not running soft bags, or accept that you run hard cases and have some sturdy carriers that can't be easily removed.

Why do you feel you need/want removable side carriers?

The only carries that remove easily, are the SW Motech ones. I had these on my Triumph and they were very rusty within a year. It is much easier to get a helmet into a top box than a side case.

I am bit curious about requirement 'A'.
Do you need the pannier to carry a spare helmet or to,lock your helmet when you are off the bike? If So won't almost an entire pannier remain empty the entire journey when you are riding the bike while the other side be filled with stuff? (Thus will impact your bike's stability).

If you intend doing long distance touring, then you should try to carry equal weight on both side panniers and have other stuff that come on and off in a top box. If you don't intend touring, then a top box and a tank bag should be sufficient,

If your need is to just fasten/lock your helmet to your bike while you are off the bike, there are other cheaper options. But if your preference is keepi your helmet locked inside a box, then a top box is the way to go. Anytop box over 28 litres will hold a full face helmet. Anything with 45 litres or over will hold two helmets.
Just my two cents worth..:)

Micatech used to make cases like that (I had a set on an R1200GSA) which would do A & B. Off the bike you only had 2 aluminum bullets so very neat. Unfortunately, they stopped making those cases (and they were really wide at the base, side-loaders).

Short of finding a used set of those and fabricating your own adapters, I think your only choice is something like Jesse's but with a top box. The top box can hold the helmet and the sides come off without hoop frames left on the bike.

While they do hold a helmet, side cases large enough for a helmet are quite huge. Awesome touring, not so much around town. The Jesse panniers come off in seconds, they leave a very sturdy double hoop rack on the bike though. For helmet storage for the commuter, etc, I'd go top box, if a box is really the choice. I use a bicycle combo cable. It's coiled out of the way around the right passenger peg. It's long enough to thread through the sleeve and the chin bar to secure the most common gear.

I would go for Givi, with their quick release rack mounts PLR2119. Then take the Dolomite Aluminum cases for the panniers and their top box.
