Hi,
I thought I would start a new thread on doing the Trans Labrador Highway next year after seeing some chatter about it on one of the tire threads. This ride was one of the reasons I traded my Concours 14 in and bought my Tenere. Originally there were three of us but one died unexpectedly and now the second is going through an unexpected divorce and is not sure what he can do next year. This is not the kind of ride I want to do alone though I’ve attached a link to a guy who did just that last year on a GS. I’ve exchanged a few e-mails with the Labrador/Newfoundland Tourist Bureau and between their rainy season and their black fly season I’m thinking the last week in May and the first week in June. A rough itinerary would be north from my home in Ma. crossing the St. Lawrence at Quebec City up to Bai Comeau, up through Quebec Prov. to the Trans Labrador over to Red Bay then a ferry to Newfoundland, then another ferry to Nova Scotia. I’m thinking four bikes whether one or two up would be the optimum number, looking for anyone who might want to join me. You can reach me at (PM me and I'll give you my email details)
Later,
Norm

Re: Repost Trans Labrador Highway

Hi Norm, This is one trip I would like to do but next year I am hoping to do Alaska. The wife and I drove the truck through Labrador in July 2009 and the black flies were unbelievable we ended coming home two days early unable to camp.

Limey..

Good post ... nice pics on the website you listed. I'd love to do that ride. I have a very good friend in PEI. But it would just take me away from home for too long I'm afraid. Someday when I'm younger. R

Re: Repost Trans Labrador Highway

If you moved the departure back to late August early September I would seriously consider it.

Hello,
I originally posted this in the 'Event" section and then noticed it did not show up on the home page. Hey Rem, maybe we need a "ride/road trip" section???
Later,
Norm
The "Event" section is the right place for this. If we need to enhance the forum to make this more visible, I'm sure we can - but let's not do multiple posts of the same thread please.

Thanks,
Rod

I did the trans lab this year, alone (definately Billy no mates..........) on a XT660R , happy to answer any questions . Best bit of advice is to take up the tourist board offer of a sat phone on loan, it really is very reassuring!

I was in Newfoundland this summer (mid August) on my ST1300. On the return ferry to Nova Scotia, I met two riders who had tackled the Trans Lab, ALONE. That is what I plan to do and it's one of the reasons I bought the Super Tenere. Neither of those two riders seemed to think riding alone was a particularly foolish thing to do. When I suggested that the road must have been "pretty desolate", one of the riders emphatically stated: "No, there was A LOT of traffic".

Would you ride it again, alone? If so, can you think of any reasons why a rider, in reasonably decent health, shouldn't ride it solo?

Thanks.

No reason at all to not ride alone. It is not a difficult ride. When I went the weather was not too kind, lots of rain, and there was still snow laying around, but apparently it was exceptionally wet and cold last June. (the ferry from NF to Lab didn't run for a while because of the high winds). I found that there quite a few bikers doing the ride, so i just set off before other groups from the various accommodation so that I knew that there were bikers behind me if anything were to go wrong. There were a few trucks on the road, and apart from lots of rain the journey was very straightforward. On the XT660 I had to carry some fuel because of the distances. I didn't camp as there are places to stay (although I did have a tent) plenty of bears and moose. The free Sat phone scheme is well worth taking advantage of. The phones are available at specififc hotels en route, contact the tourist office and reserve one. If you see I survived the Lab Highway stickers buy them, as they are not too common; I saw them before I finished and should have bought them as I never saw them again when I got to Labrador City and Quebec. Goose Bay is surprisingly big, checkout the Vulcan V bomber at the airport. I didn't pre book any hotel or B&B. I really enjoyed the Lab Highway as part of a trans Canada trip and would definately do it again.

Hi,
I am in "good" health after just getting my physical but I will also be 62 :) next year so having someone else along would be nice. I have also spent a lot of time on the road alone in the USA from Ga. to Minn. being single and having married friends who just can't get the "time" away from the wife and kids. Thanks for the input. Can anyone give me points for gas and lodging starting at Baie Comeau to Red Bay.
Thanks Again,
Norm

I don't have the distances between gas stops in front of me now but I can get them for you.But if I remember
correctly the longest is a little over 440km.
Also any one planning on doing this trip the road from Churchill falls to Goose bay will be completely
paved within 3 yrs they are paving about 150km per year.

But from GB down to the ferry will still be a dirt road .
And don't forget to stop for a chat!

Hey Norm,

I'm in Central MA. I'm recently back from dropping my bike off in FL for the winter, hoping to ride FL 1-2 x b4 I bring it back in the Spring. Left for FL day after the big snow storm. Oct 31st, did 2892 miles, some of it in the low-mid 30s, much in the mid 40s-low 50s, and had a Great time. Bike is currently at 7546 mi.

I was planning to do TLH solo but I May be interested to join a pair/small grp. This is on my bucket list, high on the list as they are paving additional sections ea yr. I can go almost any time, but my main criteria would be sane/safe riders, I'd definitely want to avoid any prolific/high bug-season, and, would choose not to travel at a time that is severe-cold unnecessarily.

Let's talk.

PM sent.

Cheers, dean
