Dear God…. Not ANOTHER tire review?!?

Yup... but on a tire that has – as near as I can tell – been virtually ignored by the forum here. I am talking not about the Mitas e07 but rather the e09.

Here is the freshly mounted e09 Dakar from Mitas


There is all kinds of chatter here about a wide variety of tires. Most ST riders run something closer to a 50/50 or 60/40 street to dirt ratio and there are lots of options out there in this genre. But what about pure knobbies? I bought my Tenere – aka Fancy (cuz she ain’t!) - to be an offroad machine and have been accused on more than one occasion by a few inmates here of taking her where she does not belong. But that’s how it goes… I have long subscribed to the philosophy that SnakeBitten has coined as either the WLDB (World’s Largest Dirtbike) or BDITW (Biggest Dirtbike in the World).

So I like knobby tires and I am willing to pay the price when it comes to the short treadlife that my chosen terrain and overeager right wrist begets. I will first off qualify that my review is limited in the sense that all my miles are mostly on backroads and gravel/dirt. I am not a high-mileage interstate traveler, never ride two-up, strive to avoid the rain like the plague, stay mostly in Tmode with TC off, and have the bike bone stock when it comes ECU flashing.

Furthermore... I am utterly tire agnostic. All these comments about how this tire or that tire allow one to initiate turns better or how one tire might be better at wet pavement than another is utterly foreign to me. I spoon tires on and push the Tenere the same regardless of her shoes. I started with whatever the PO had on there – maybe Battlewings - not sure, but they sucked big time. I have since gone through a K60 rear, a TKC rear, a BigBlock rear, and now onto this e09 rear. Interestingly, I have had a K60 on the front throughout these last 4 rears and love it.

So, the Mitas e09…? There is lots of info here on the much beloved e07 from Mitas but seemingly next to nothing on the e09. I saw a set in a photo here at the forum posted by Cosmic and it was so knobby and simply badass looking that it got me all excited. MX1 in Canada was the only NA supplier at the time but I soon found that MotoRace in the NE was getting their first shipment in and would be a US retailer. So I ordered the e09 Dakar for $183 delivered to my door. Woohoo!!!

Mounting was a bear, but made MUCH easier with my new-to-me HF tire mounting machine. The legendary stiffness and install difficulty of the K60 was rendered a joke when compared to this Mitas e09 Dakar. Lying on my cement garage floor, the K60 sidewall easily compresses to touch the other sidewall under my 180+ lbs. The e09’s sidewalls barely noticed I was standing on it and I could not touch sidewalls even with vigorous bouncing. These things are MEGA burly!!

Once on the bike… the tire just looks mean and aggressive – no two ways about it. OK, I admit, I am a sucker for the way a tire looks on bike. I am now 500 miles into the new e09 (approx 1/4 the life of a BigBlock) and feel that I can compare. I see no major difference in performance on road from any of the tires listed above. I can rage through the twisties and rub boot edges on pavement with any of these tires. Even as knobby as the e09 is, it shows no inhibition when pushed hard on pavement. I have not ridden in the rain in them yet, but like I said above… I avoid the rain and do not buy tires based on a performance parameter that I rarely explore.

Offroad, these tires are simply amazing! Here in Appalachia right now we have a ton of loose leaves down everywhere that can be quite slippery. And on yesterday’s ride we encountered some of the first frost heaved roads of the season. This produces a mud with an icy pudding-like consistency mud that encourages the backend of the bike to wander around. The e09’s hooked up and ate this stuff up with eager abandon and seemed well planted. The treads clear mud quickly and the aggressive lateral oriented side tread lugs helped dig in when the bike slid off into some of the ruts. I am extremely pleased with the ties and there is nothing so far that I do not like about them.

The biggest wildcard on these tires is going to be treadlife. They cost around $70 more than the Big Blocks which had been my favorite tire up to now. The Big Blocks came in at around $0.055 per mile ($110 for approx 2000 miles). If the e09’s can last a bit longer and get a miles-per -dollar ratio down close to that range, they may very well be the only tire that I run on Fancy. Right now at 500 miles in... they seem like they will last longer than the Big Blocks. Time will tell...

If you like knobbies, you owe it to yourself to try a set of these bad boys.

my buddy is running one on his modifed vstrom 650, quite likes it.

I'll be sticking to my usual e-07 three ply. Good compromise of what I need it to do.

I keep hearing about these mad scientist tire guys testing tires out the wazzoo and I'm jealous. That looks like one heck of a tire, might have to give that a try next go round. I'm looking for something a little different from the K60.

Tire life is very much personal thing, but i hope i can help you to figure out what would be the minimum one.
When off road, I'm riding w/TC OFF - ABS OFF. I powerslide a lot, and slide the rear into corners most of the time.

my rear E09 Dakar lasted 2600mls. I could push it to 3000, but only on the black top.

Just for the sake of comparison, the TKC 80 lasted on me 2100mls. At that time i was TC2/ABS ON mode.

Imo, this is a very valid, if not the best off road tire for S10 available.

Dry tarmac is just fine, but wet one is shite compared to, let say TKC. I would say that extra coution is needed while riding in wet.
Very important... i was on a very dependable TKC at the front, so no experience with the more mx threaded E09.

Thanks for chiming in Cosmic. As I noted in my original post, it was your pics here at the forum that got me interested in the Mitas e09 to begin with. And many thanks to MotoRace and also now Durelle Racing for selling Mitas tires here in the US.

I would imagine that the rain performance of the e09 - like any pure knobby tire - is less than optimal. But since I rarely ride in the rain and if I do... I have no problem dialing my riding style back a notch or two - I am not too concerned about a knobby tire's wet pavement performance parameter.

I calculated that I need the e09 to get to 3300 miles to equal the dollar-to-mile ratio of the BigBlocks. But I think that I will like the e09 so much that I might be willing to tolerate a bit higher ratio. I guess time will tell. The only problem is that winter is here along with the bad weather and salted roads so my riding time will be diminished. So I am fairly certain that I'll be wrapping up this e09 experiment next Spring.

How about the front one? E09 or something else?
Lot of guys are pairing rear E09 with the front E10. Dunno why, because if I look for the off road performance, i want something that bites in the front. Any input?

I'm currently running brand new E07 dakar, but i think i choose wrong period for that experiment. Winter here are mild, but slippery.

So... winter has passed and I am back out flogging the e09 on Fancy in the dirt. I thought I'd give you a report 1300 miles in...

Street: I still manage to rub my outside boot edges in the paved twisties. That's about all that one can ask for out of a "knobby" tire.

Dirt: The tire hooks up. PERIOD!!! Gravel, mud, dirt, sand... this tire eats it all up. I have ZERO complaints.

Mileage: I am over halfway thru the total miles of a Kenda BigBlock and the Mitas e09 looks to have half or better its life left. So I feel that this will outlast the Big Block for sure.

Those of you who want another 80/20 knobby tire (yeah... that's you, Snakebitten!!!) - take a look at this tire.

I just ordered a "backup" e09 rear for $175 delivered from Motorace so that I am covered in the event that I get itchy and flog this one out before I go to Romney!

Im just about at the end of my first E09 lifespan. E09 Dakar on rear, regular E09 on the front.

I put them on about 5,500km ago and I reckon theyve got about 500km left. For the first time in my riding history, it seems the front has worn almost as quick as the rear. Ill be replacing both when I get around to it.

I always ride in T mode and usually switch TC off when on dirt. I like hanging the back out a bit too much.

Half these kilometres were done fully loaded. Panniers, top box, tank bag and all full to the bream with camp gear, tools and water, etc.

I ran 34psi front and around 40-42 in the rear. I weigh about 100kg with all my gear on. Then theres around 35kg of luggage, give or take.

I like the tyres. They have gotten me out of some places that a bike like this shouldnt be. Im an explorer, by definition not profession, and often find myself in terrain out of the bikes depth. Good aggressive tyres really help.

Would I buy the E09's again? Yes. They're my default knobby tyre now if I plan on more technical terrain, sand and/or mud.

Although, Im going to try out the E07's next to see how they compare.

Gun... your review is about spot on with mine.

I now have 2200 miles on my rear e09 and I too, like the TC off and hang the rear out as you put it. I have thrashed this rear e09 on purpose to see how it performs and lasts under heavy throttle use in mostly offroad terrain. I have a brand new e09 sitting in my garage so I can directly compare tread depth. At 2200 miles, I am just about halfway thru the tread depth when compared to getting down to the actual carcass - not that the tire would be pretty very effective if you got down that low. I figure that I will have another 1k on this rear before it is due to change. Or maybe this upcoming Romney trip will push it over the edge. No matter... the e09 is so far easily surpassing the lifespan of the other knobbies that I have tried - TKC, Bog Block, etc... I have already bought another - as noted - and will likely keep Fancy's rearend shod with the e09 for the foreseeable future.

I spoke with Dave at Motorace (one of the US importers for Mitas) and he did confirm that the e09 is is a softer compound than the e07. So life expectancy is gonna be less by default. But the performance of the e09 more than justifies the shorter life intervals. I got my last one delivered to my door for $174 from Dave at Motorace. I will more than likely bring my spare rear to Romney with me as a "backup" so any interested inmates are welcome to check it out.
