I'm off to Dawson City Saturday. Just a quickie. An overnighter. Nothing so elaborate as Colorider's pilgrimage to Texas but what the heck. Which got me thinking about places to ride on the Tenere. If any of you are heading up this way, you must consider tne South and North Canol Roads. There will be tons of stuff to Google about it. Lots of historical stuff. But mainly, it is a perfect road for the Tenere. Here is a little teaser for you. Not the best website I've ever seen, but I like the format and it will give you a good idea of what to expect. Give it some thought.

Pick North or South "map", then click on the little numbers to give you a picture of that same spot on the map. Or select "Pics" and just scroll through. Ain't new fangled technology wonderful? It's not really that new, is it? Gets me all worked up, though. Enjoy. R

I know that there are likely many local sites/clubs that post info on trails, but it would be nice to have a nationwide site that brings them all together.

So many trails, so little time .... and money. It would be interesting if each forum member submitted his/her single favorite TT (Tenere Trail) from their area. This would be mine, I think. Good road, gorgeous scenery, lots of goat trails off to the side if you're a skilled rider, and you can always hitch a ride with a mosquito if you get stranded. But seriously folks, these are remote areas, especially the North Canol. You could feasibly ride either road and not meet another vehicle. No services. But they are fairly short so you can do the South Canol in a day and end up at Ross River. Then you could do the North Canol to the border and back in a LONG day if you wanted. You can camp anywhere you want to. There is almost no private property up here. Just pull off the road and camp. I'd drink the water from any of the streams. I've been on the South Canol many times. I drove the North Canol once many years ago. No worries. Rain is brutal as it can turn the road into loon shit. R

Thanks for the links Rem! As I stated in another thread, my plan is to take my SuperT to Alaska in 2012 and it sounds like these areas are worthy of consideration! :)

Enjoy your trip to Dawson City!!!

10-4, I hope to. Just talked to some friends who drove down from Dawson today. "Oh, it snowed on us", he says. Ehhhh. It's the Yukon. Back Sunday evening. It will all be good. It's not Texas but ..... it'll do. R

I'm not sure if I'd want to trade or not. No, actually I'm sure. Last summer we had a couple of days where the temps went up into the 80's. I was near toasted. We just aren't used to that. On the way back from Skagway I had to remove my riding jacket. I was very exposed, but I was beginning to get sick to my stomach due to the heat. Had to do it. We see temps like that maybe once every three years, for maybe one day. It's just not worth buying the mesh gear for. It was an awesome day. I remember my bike thermometer registering 30 °C right about Tutshi Lake (86 F). Up here, 75 is considered a good hot day. Drops down into the low 60's at night, or lower .... every night.

Let's be careful coming back. Don't take any chances with that tire. R

You're in for a treat on both. Especially the Dempster. Awesome and incredible come to mind. If you're so inclined, and if my Tenere gets here when it's supposed to, I might join you for the first leg up the South Canol. If you're camping, camp anywhere you want. If you're motel-ing, plan on Faro, not Ross River. I could meet you at Johnson's Crossing, where you'll want to gas up, then carry on up the SC to Faro. Easy day trip, even stopping for pics. Then I'll kick it on home south from Carmacks, where you'll turn north. Please keep me posted. I have some pics from a couple years ago. I'll see if I can dig them up. Hmmm .... I could only find a few. The first is right outside of Faro, Yukon. The Second is off the South Canol a little way (I got to this spot by helicopter), the rest are from the bike trip on the South Canol. You'll like it. R

Thanks for the great pictures. I will be glad to give you a ring when we get withen a half day of Johnson Crossing. We really can't plan it very close from here because of the great distance. We will be camping, we just ride as far as we can each day and camp at dark. We ride hard. We will be exploring some of them side roads on the S.C. They are what we are looking for. Steve

Well, I've got the perfect spot for a gathering. There are six of us from the Yukon alone with a Tenere on order. Would be neat to have about a dozen of us line up for a photo shoot. I'm your dog. Let's work on it. R

Just started readin a book by Neil Pert called Ghost Rider. He describes his travels on the dempster in great detail. Sounds incredible.

By the way Rem, what time zone are you in? Not personally, I mean geographically :)

Yukon is Pacific Time Zone. I haven't been on the Dempster for 20 years, but at one time I spent a great deal of time on it. It truly is one of the more incredible places on earth. They carved a road out of a true remote wilderness. The Richardson Mountains will knock your biker shorts off. Grayling in every stream from the Blackstone to the Peel River and more. The road surface is still hard on tires apparently, but a lot better than it used to be. I'd be up for a run one day soon. We're going right by the Dempster on the way to Dawson tomorrow. The Dempster Cutoff is about 24 miles south of Dawson. You cross the Klondike River right off the bat as soon as you turn onto the Dempster. Don't come too early, or too late. But come. R

i remember it being very remote in the yukon when i rode up there in 2001 on my ST1100. I stayed in whitehorse for a few hours at most before heading down the road to Haines Jct to see some chickey i met there!!! The next day i rode from haines jct to watson lake in 8 1/2 hours. What a ride, I was moving fast that day, with an hour nap along side the road!!!

Haines Junction is a mighty purty part of the world. For a real treat, take another 3 hours or so and kick on over to Haines, Alaska. A beautiful drive. Catch the ferry to Skagway then a very nice 2 hour ride to Whitehorse. But don't sell yourself short. Washington ain't exactly disgusting. I'm hoping to make a ride down through B. C., Idaho, Oregon and Washington this fall or next spring. There are just SO MANY ROADS down there. Jeeze ..... I'd go nuts trying to figure out which way to go. Up here, not too many choices. Anyway, I'm heading north to Dawson this morning. Weather looks okay .. so-so ... not to bad ... ehh. It will all work out. Leaving in 2 hours. You boys behave yourselves while I'm gone. I don't want to have to dispatch Vinny and Guido when I get back. Enjoy your weekend one and all. Ride safe. Be kind to one another. We're all in the same bike ... uh, boat. Take care. R

I did that ride a few years ago, to Haines then the ferry to Skagway. Took one of the best pictures that I have ever taken at Carcross, the water with the bridge the buildings and reflections were just right. I may take the Tenere up there next year.
