Well, Ive aways thought I had "enough" light on the bike.... I have forgotten how many lumens, Etc...... But starting the IDBDR near Jarbidge, NV I realized at 12AM WAY out in the BACK WOODS I needed more light. This was "cave" dark.... Absolutely pitch black out......

OK, so I decided for size, to get the most light with the smallest package.... for about 20 years my go-to lights are Baja Designs... 100%.... Probably the only brand in my whole life that Im 100% diehard brand loyal. They have served me well over so many years...

Anyhow I have mocked up one bracket and working on the other side... I might shelve these and try something a little different, but this is the "location" Im thinking of.... These should help on the next BDR and some serious desert crossing at night.

This one side is not completed and not in its finished state... It's just "stuck" together.......

Anyone that might be interested: I run each set of lights independently with each set having its own switch and relay. (now have three sets) I DO NOT use a fuse block. This set Im showing will actually be wired into my factory high beams...... I will also add a "European style flash option" , a micro-momentary switch so I can tap the button as a "flash"... I have a choice to have this ignition on or off... I will probably choose to wire it off, then I can use the "flash" even with no key, or the bike turned off.... So it will have a constant 'on' with the high-beam switch and also an independent flash button. This set as well will be fully independent and totally stand alone. When I use this "flash" button, the lights will stay on as long as im touching this little button. If in the desert and trying to get someone's attention I can tap the button and get a "flashing effect".... this is how I will be using it... I could also use it if I wanted more light around a corner for just a few seconds.... Im not implying that I will use this button to "flash" cars in a city or high way / road way use... NO...

My Clearwater sevina and super sevina lights are worth every penny. Something like 18,500 lumen output per pair... And the relay comes with 2 other output wires to hook up some Darlas. They all run on high and low beam. Put your low beam on and they go down to whatever you have the rheostat set too. I'm at 30%. I light up everything and even during the day you can see me from a long ways off. I'm tempted to put a set of Darlas on but... Why??? Hmmmm, Just because I can!

The lummens are important to calculate how much lighting you are going to have... but don't forget to calculate the watts of consumption... The alternator is not infinite... and if I remember correctly, Chckwrcks, in some post (I think the one from DDad with the burnt alternator of the 1290), put how many W the alternator generates, and how much the accessories consume... I seem to remember that there was an extra bonus of leftover W, as long as you saved W by changing the 60w lamps (60+60=120W) of the headlight, with low consumption ones (35+35)...otherwise there wouldn't be many W left over...or at least to prevent the alternator from working at 100%

If doing mine over I would most likely choose the big Clearwaters like Tenere Guy has but I would also buy the colored slip on lens covers simply because they make the bike so much more noticeable to other drivers.

Our bikes already have this. You do go on to mention you'd like it to work key off etc but if that's not a firm requirement then no need to reinvent the wheel.

I have the yellow slip ons but am using the clear. I will try the yellow and see.

I have gone to low wattage LED Headlights so I don't believe I am cooking my Alternator.
