I'll echoe the thought that the bars stopped the fall of a 600 pound machine. That said, when Tim dropped the DL650 fairly hard, we were able to bend them back with a BIG piece of timber, then touch up with a little crushed on satin black Rustoleum.

When he did it again, we found that Twisted Throttle WILL sell single bars.

Re: SW Motech Crash Bars

I may have bent my Alt rider bars ....a tiny bit. I've concluded my bars are sacrificial and thankfully the bike has only a couple digs into the plastic hand guards.

I may have bent the right side bar because the radiator side cover seems harder to get off. It could be that I'm just loosing my patience with those plastic covers and the minimal clearance issue. ::010:: So - never mind. ::025::

If you look at how the SW bars attach to the bike you will see that all attachment points us flat bar not tubing. The upper front attachment has a moderate "Z" shape which would lend it to flexing or bending fairly easily. The lower mounts use straight flat bar which can bend or flex easily as well. This design would also allow for easy reshaping or bend back to original location after a lay-down.

Alt bars are tubing all the way to the mounting points and others may have this design as well. Tubing is stronger in all flex directions. Flat bar only in it's widest aspect.

just some thoughts

Doesn't Hepco make a set of lower crash bars that are nearer to the OEM setup, but in bar shape? Anyone have any experience with those?

How about these (see link)? I strongly considered these before I bought the SWs, but unfortunately, Twisted Throttle wasn't able to tell me if you could access the electrical panel with them mounted. I liked that they retain the OEM hard rubber crash bar, which, from what I've read/seen is a pretty tough piece. Obviously the mounting system is similar to the SWs, but it sure seems like the OEM crash bar would take most of the initial impact in most falls, unlike the SWs. Less overall coverage than the SWs, but again, retaining the OEM piece appealed to me. Sorry about the lack of a an uploaded picture, couldn't get it to save from TTs website...

I believe that Justbob has those. If that is correct, I think he said that he could not remove the covers with them. Bob, are you out there?

I recall the same as well.

Those R&G bars are $297 to boot. SERIOUSLY? I mean, REALLY? I'd rather buy two sets of Givi bars.
