Speedometer WAAAAAAY off

So, I just picked up this new to be 2013 S10 last week with just shy of 6k miles. I have not had a chance to get on it other than a quick test drive around the neighborhood where I went and picked it up (the weather her has been crap). Today I had a few minutes so I hopped on for a quick spin down the driveway and back. I noticed as soon as I took off, the speedometer was reading in the teens, and I had barely let out on the clutch. At one point as I was coming back up the mountain, it was reading 40 mph, and I know I was doing maybe 20 mph at best.

I am hoping the collective knowledge in this forum will guide me in the right direction!

Good looking bike and welcome to the forum. I'm guessing your speedometer is set to KPH. You can change it back to MPH by pushing a button on the dash...check your owners manual. 2013 S10 speedometers are not very accurate usually reading about 5 mph fast.

Is it a kph Canada bike? IIRC they have the Yamaha immobiliser system, paired to the ECU, which comes with 2 black keys & 1 red coding key.

My 2014 S10 reads c.8% fast, which I think is pretty normal, when compared to the GPS readout.

The mileage is extremely low, so there must be a back story.

They didnt get the Gallon right last time, im not sure Europe would take a chance with KPH.

These answers you are getting are all over the place, so let me try to say it a little better. The 2012 thru 2013 USA models had speedometers that were about eight percent optimistic so they always read high. Not as high as what you are saying, but high, none the less. On top of that, as others have said above, you can switch from MPH to KPH. Check again that that is not the case with yours.

I took this data from another publication... but it seems that the ECU was distributed in this way in 2012/13... what is the difference in -00/-30/-40... etc... I don't know, or why it appears for the same model/region, 2 ECUs?…..but in some publication I knew how to read that in France
the power of the S10 was limited by traffic regulations to 100HP…….

Apparently the restriction ended in 2016…but that would mean that in France, the S10 -2016…were restricted to 100Hp

If you decide to add cruise control from McCruise, for an extra fee you can add the speedometer recalibration.
Mine is now accurate with the gps up to about 80mph.

so you can switch on the button, from mph to kph on a 2012-13 usa bike did not know that i thought it was canada your side only

I have a 2013 and yes you can switch from kilometers to miles at the push of a button. USA model. Speedometer, odometer and trip meters all change.

Yes, this is correct to my understanding, USA bikes can be switched back and forth between KPH & MPH though.

I was able to get out again today for short ride to compare it with GPS speed. The first thing I did was ensure it was indeed reading in MPH and not KPH. When I started off it was the same as yesterday, reading 10-20 MPH above what the GPS was reading. However, after a few minutes of riding it seemed to correct itself somewhat, reading closer to 5 MPH off. Not sure what the issue was, but I'll keep an eye on it as the weather improves and I actually get some decent seat time.

I'm sure I'll have more questions coming in the future, since this is my first ST10, and I have to learn this new to me platform.

There is a speed sensor on each wheel, not sure which one supplies the signal for speedometer, probably the front one. Maybe it just needs a good cleaning. Good luck. These sensors also supply info for the ABS and traction control...just so you are aware the ABS and traction control may not be working properly either.

The error on Gen1 bikes is about 8%, so it will vary with speed.

Also varies with tire wear, a new tire will be a little more accurate than a worn out tire.
