I was wondering if anyone had the Altrider luggage rack + Givi monokey mounting kit, and whether they'd bothered replacing the standard bolts with "security" bolts (i.e. needing a special hex key rather than a standard one to remove the pillars from the underside and steal the box)?

Most anything we put on a motorcycle is there only to keep the honest thieves honest. A solid blow with a hammer will pop the lock on most of the plastic top boxes, much quicker than taking the whole box. My fairly expensive Jesse's can be defeated with a screw driver. A very expensive GPS lock on the cross bar can be defeated with an allen key and a couple screws. Security is a leap of faith I'm afraid. :(

@Don Yes I agree. They could mostly dismantle the bike and leave the wheel chained to the lamp-post if they wanted to. Like you say it's just to stop the "opportunist" thief. Since I already have the big plastic rack it seems daft to go backwards and make it easier for them by fitting the altrider kit though, so I thought I'd just get some "security" allen bolts with the small pillars in the hex-slot just to make sure at least a basic allen key won't work. That'll be enough for me.

Cheers,

Neil.

Good points Don ::008:: although I have a Touratech locking mount for my GPS and its a Royal pain in the Arse to unlock even with the key

My Givi Trekker monokey side cases are attached via the Givi Rapid release frame system which features a hole on the pillion peg mounting bracket through which a padlock can be installed to improve security thereby locking the frame to the bike

Speaking of security type bolts, I was mildly amused, but mostly annoyed, that when fitting the upper OEM Yamaha side case mounting brackets that the rear bolt was a T-50 Torx security/anti-tamper type. Stopped me cold on the installation until I could go to the store and purchase the correct bit the next day. The stores were all closed for the evening already when I discovered this. Yamaha should have made some mention of this in their instructions or included the correct bit so that I would not have gotten stuck unable to complete the installation - annoying.

I don't really see the point anyway. First, that bolt is pretty hard to access with the cases in place so unless the thief intends to steal the brackets, the security value is questionable. Second, it was a simple matter to purchase the correct bit at Lowe's or Sears. While on that I also question the value of the T-10 security screws inside the case that retain the locks. If the thief has access to these it's kinda too late right?

Slightly off topic, but, I had issues with mounting the Givi Outback topbox on the Altrider rack.
The little pads that come with are really not enough to keep the box from rattling around.
I finally found the solution in a piece of foam from Michaels. I think it was 6mm thick and worked to tighten the box to the rack.
I did have to use a bit of downward pressure to get the catch to click.
