I think they both generally fine. As noted above, the S10 will give you reliability and simplicity, the BMW more performance and features at the expense of reliability and simplicity.
I've n very experienced the whole "elitism" thing from bmw owners. Seems about like everyone and they geek out on motorbikes, too.
I joined the BMW MOA when I picked up my '87 K75S. A never endinging resoration project, but that's why I'd got it. New parts are still available, which has been quite useful. The monthly magazine has some good articles and there's a decent mix of old and new motorbike content. Mostly it's about riding. Last month's edition had a pretty good writeup about first aid and medical considerations for remote riding.
I'm just happy to see people ride. Enjoy what you've got. The S10 is a great machine. Mine's not going anywhere, except riding.
