Not a long ride....actually only about 15 miles from town.
The Sheep Springs Petroglyphs are located within the El Paso Mountain Range on the edge of the El Paso Wilderness Area in eastern Kern County, CA. It's a pretty easy off-road route thru some boulder fields, dry river beds and lava fields. The petroglyphs are located on volcanic rock along a hill-side. There are hundreds scattered about. Some historians date them as far back as AD 100. The images are not always easy to make out or interpret.
Notice how green the Cottonwood's are out here in the middle of the desert? There is a underground spring running thru this area, and in a wet spring it actually comes to the surface in spots. In one pic you can see where the the spring ran above ground as the rocks have been worn smooth.
Pretty neat.
