I am very seriously considering a ride south from Arizona to South America. I am 37 years old and I have been studying Spanish for about a year and a half which is not anywhere near fluent but I can find un ba~no, gasolina, y comida. I have had a wild itch to simply get up and go. I spent 5 weeks last year in Costa Rica and I have been to Mexico numerous times. I truly do not think that this is a "dangerous" journey. I want to find out if anyone out there is interested in this trip. There is no time line and no time limit. I have done 1,500 miles in 24 hours but that is not the goal of this proposed expedition. After all, there are potholes that will ruin a motorcycle. My goal is to travel to foreign lands, enjoy the journey, the beaches, las ciudades, and the scenery. I do not yet own an "adventure bike" but I am considering the Super T for such a trip. Any interest, please call or email me and we can talk. Muchas Gracias!

Do it.
Enjoy the one life you got and go.
The sights and people are worth the time and lesser things spent.

But from somebody who has spent a life traveling abroad, the need to be ever vigilant is real. It's real easy to wake up alone and with nothing.

Well, it's on my bucket list but I probably can't consider it till late '14 because I'm still strapped in to the paycheck for a while. Already planning Alaska in the Summer of '14 so if you want to go as far north on a road as possibke and then follow it up with going as far south as possible it'd make a banner year :)

I'm penciled in for going to South America in 2014. It's on my itinerary too! Luckily my Spanish is muy bien and I love Latin America. Don't delay, go today!

Tell us more about that one Bob! ;-)

True though... My dad's pretty clueless at times, is very gregarious, plus likes a drink. Not a good combo in some places. He had his drink spiked in Thailand by some new "friends" and woke up 3 days later, wallet cleaned out. Somehow he gotten back to his hotel room, but doesn't remember how. He was lucky - in his mid-70's and not in the best of health, it could have been a lot worse.

Anyway - to the original question - i'm on my way to chile now, in oregon currently. Maybe you can catch me up? ;-)

I don't know if you've had a chance to read this rr, but if you have not, it is a really great read.

Sounds like your old man is one tough bird! Obviously, the apple didn't fall far from the tree, either. ::003::

After chasing broken airplanes around the world for a few decades, I've been lucky. The worst for me were the Christmas '95 kidnap attempt that my buddy and I got out of in Cali, Colombia; being with a flight crew in which a girl got knifed to death in Kingston in about 1980(?); and a few robberies and such.

Although in a different context, Buddha said that we need to develop continual awareness.

Taking a boat ride around Columbia is the only thing I have to suggest. The rest is supposed to be a blast. How did that famous Tenere rider do it? Did he ferry around Columbia? Three times... ::26::

Colombia is a beautiful country with great warm people. Most of them.
You just want to make sure that you are (#1) with a Colombian and (#2) keep asking locals or the policia what roads ahead of you the banditos run roadblocks on.

You mean Nick Sanders? Didn't he use airplanes to get around the Gap? There is a great post on ADVRider about catching a ride on a catamaran and sailing around the Gap with the bike in plastic wrap and strapped down on deck.
