So I went to the race tech site to check what spring rate would be right for me. I put in my weight - 240lbs. And it came up with a 19.6kg/mm. It also said the stock spring was 12.4kg/mm I think. Using their calculator, the stock spring is good for a rider less than 100lbs. My question is if I re-spring the shock, how does it affect the rebound? With that big of change would it be better to put the spring money towards a complete shock?

Thanks.

Millman, with my riding gear on my weight is around 230. After talking with Penske, I think and new shock and heavier spring is in the very near future for me. The Penske shock can be rebuilt while the stock is not an easy, if possible rebuild.

Good Luck

I ordered a spring for mine today from Race Tech. Same body weight and ordered the 19.6 with the two collars that are needed for the install.
I'd like to buy a nice shock, but that isn't in the budget right now. I'll let you know how things do with the heavy spring.
What's the worse that can happen? lol :))

How was the removal of the shock? It doesn't look too bad from some of the videos.

Actual removal of the shock from the bike is simple. I took it out of the right side as someone here posted some time ago. Just remember to remove the wire cable router thing to get that out of the way so it will pull out. I also put a strap around the passenger seat to the rear wheel to pull up on the suspension to help get it out.

I bought a coil spring compressor from Advanced Auto, but it was more for a car or truck and not a moto. I would recommend getting the Tusk spring compressor from Rocky Mtn or a model like it. It took us a good hour to get the spring compressed enough to get it off as the "teeth" that hold the spring kept slipping.

Someone here has a good photo of putting the shock in a vice upside down and attaching the spring compressors to the spring and vice. Just ideas :-\

So right now I got sag perfect with no gear or my Wolfman Luggage attached as it usually is. I have no pre-load on the shock with perfect sag.

Right now I'm looking to figure out where the damping should be at with this rate spring? I think I have it about four or five clicks in, so little damping at all. It doesn't seem to bounce or spring up so maybe its spot on? I need to get out on a better ride around town and mess with it a little.
