I'm gonna be in Germany on business mid to late August over a weekend so I'm planning on renting a bike and taking a nice long ride....

I'm going to be in Stuttgart, and was thinking of heading down to Stelvio Pass and back up....I started roughing out routes and would appreciate input on better routes, nicer passes etc if you have experience. Also, if you have stayed in or around Stelvio somewhere, I was figuring Bormio, but I'm not married to the place....just seemed like the closest town to Stelvio

Stuttgart down to Bormio, by way of Stelvio

Thanks !!

Loads of passes, I was here in 2010, we stopped at 3 locations, near Mont Blanc, Andermatt and Finally Livigno (Near Stelvio) where in a couple of days we rode a number of passes (Stelvio, Splugen, Umbrail, Albula, Fluella, Majola, Bernina, Ofen, Julier)

Livigno is a good base as it is duty free (under a Euro a Litre when we were there) and has a good number of bars and restaurants.

The Stelvio is far from the best pass, certainly one to tick off the list and worth riding up for a cuppa at the top and to take some piccies - the views at the top are wonderful.

But if you could work some of those other passes in then do so, I think you may also easily be able to come in over the Timmelsjoch - another must-do pass.

My report from 2010:-

A few more are here

The Splugen is something else, very slow winding up from the Italian side, but totally stunning if you get the sort of weather we had:-

Plus it is so easy to loop so many passes into any trip in this region, if you can get a full day in the area you will be spoiled for choice, our trip that included the Splugen was awesome and if you can grab a couple of days down there to cover this and maybe the Albula then do so.

Any more input from anyone?

I was figuring we would take the autobahn all the way to Fussen to maximize time in the mountains

I'm going to get the bike Friday afternoon and leave early Saturday, returning Sunday

most likely I'll stay in either Bormio or Livigno on Saturday night

I'm piecing together the route with your pass recommendations, Thank you again....I'm struggling with the best way back to Stuttgart
