it depends on what your considerations are. if you want storage and keep it narrow profile for lane splitting or narrow trails, you would go with cut. The narrowest I've seen so far with grab handles retained are happy trail denali 7.5 clif at 33.5" width at the rear mounted on ST. If you don't care about grab handles then I believe jesse bags may be mounted closer to the bike resulting in a narrower profile. If you don't care about the narrow profile at all, then it's up to you, whatever you find most practical and appealing. Having a cut just lets you to place a bag around muffler and closer to the subframe.

Just to be sure you are aware of the specifics on Jesse bags... If you remove the grab handles, the Jesse bags will NOT fit on the left side due to interference from the stock muffler (on a 2014). ASk me how I know. LOL

My 10" Odyssey II's are (as far as I can tell) the same width as my handlebars or so close as not be an issue on a narrow trail.

Very happy with my Holan's!

Nice and narrow and hold a ton, but does make for tight pillion accommodations...

what are most people buying cut out side cases for the exhaust?
No idea what most people are doing. I like strait panniers. both for packing loose stuff, and for liner bags, it's just easier for me to get to things and pull a liner bag out. I use stuff boxes in one pannier, (Touratech Zega Pros), and one or two liner bags in the other.

What will you put in your panniers and how will you pack it? That should tell you what may work best for you. The width isn't really an issue unless you're going with 45 liter panniers on both sides.
