Ohlins noise

I just installed a YA 013 Ohlins rear shock in my 2014 non ES and was surprised by how noisy the shock is in the rebound stroke. Is this typical of the breed or perhaps trouble? The damping feels controlled and smooth...just a rather loud 'WOOSH' on rebound.

Also, should the rebound damping adjuster have specific positions that are held by a detent that 'clicks' or just a smooth adjustment without 'clicks'? I don't feel the typical click positions with the rebound adjustment knob.

I am guessing that the shock gas is depleted. I find that when I am rebuilding my dirt bike shocks that until i pressurize the chamber, the rebound "clicker" doesn't click.

The "whoosh" might be fluid cavitation due to the un-pressurized shock.

The way to test is to remove the shock, remove the spring, and see whether the shock will expand after you compress the shock shaft. My guess is that if your Ohilins is like my ohlins, the nitrogen is filled with a needle through a rubber port. If the shock is out of gas, then you'll need to refill it, and find out where the leak is.

Blitz,
Thank you for your informative response, you describe the situation perfectly.
The shock is new so I'll ask the seller for a return shipping label and hope they turn it around quick.
Thanks again
Eric

I think the sound is normal.
Anyway, will the sound change, if you adjust the damping?

Nikol, yes, the sound does change when you adjust. But still, the adjustment knob should click to each setting and this one does not so as far as I'm concerned, it's defective.

You are correct.
The not "clicking" is strange :).
But I would not be surprised, if a new one, makes the same sound.

I ended up sending the shock back to Ohlins USA, I haven't spoke to anyone there yet but it seems it either wasn't charged before shipped or had a leak. I also had them replace the spring, not only was there a problem with the damping, they blew it on the spring rate despite my having filled out a form that gave rider weight, luggage, pillion, riding style, etc....

So despite the minor hassle, I'm happy. Matt at Ohlins USA was very helpful and reacted exactly as you would want in a situation like this, they sorted out the shock and turned it around in one day. I just finished the install a couple hours ago and it's clear this one is going to be fine, the rebound damping adjuster is working as it should and the spring rate seems just right too...yeehaw, and fall riding is just starting!
