I picked up my top case today. Word of warning .... if you procure this kit be very careful when prepping the box for mounting. The unit comes in an open 'latch safe' condition. The latch is fixed back with a self tapper. Do not remove this until the lock barrel has been installed. I did and ended up having to strip the unit down. The thing grenades on you and you need three hands all very small and strong to reassemble the poxy thing. What should have been a five minute job turned into a frustrating two hour exercise in futility. Many thanks to my superb wife for helping me and putting up with my non stop profanity and bad tempered tantrums. ??? ::)

Sounds like my wife if I "lose it", except she is fine once I have settled down - but stays away from my until then.

Swagger - glad you got it all back together!!!

She's a real diamond .... lost the skin off of her knuckles and everything ::) Also you gotta remember that she hasn't seen me for a while .... it'll wear off. That case mechanism is incredible ... it's full of springy, sharp, sticky out things that have, what seems to be, ballistically calibrated qualities. Just don't do what I did ... you will regret it and obviously there are no instructions .... you don't know what flew out or where anything should go even if you do find all of the bits. Nightmare. ::)

Hi Swagger,

Glad you got the thing assembled again. I am planning to get the OEM topcase as well, since I like the over square look.
What do you think of the build quality, and is it easy/quick to remove and attacha again to the bike?

Your experience in this regard is appreciated,

Regards,
Andre

Hi Yahmy,
I too like the boxy look of the OEM kit. I think it suits the bike. Personally I'm very happy with the quality of the OEM luggage. My XT1200Z is the limited edition model and came with the panniers as std. so the top case was the obvious choice. Once you appreciate how the cases work they are very easy to live with. Waterproof, robust, light, handsome ... bit like me. Fit and finish is good too. Turn the key to the left, the latch drops and the case comes right off. If you need pics shout and I'll go get 'em.

Best description I've heard for anything in a while.

Looking at top case options and am leaning towards the OEM case. Does anyone ride with just the top case? I think I would for my commute since it would be simple to stash the helmet, gloves in it. Any pics of the S10 with just the top case would be appreciated. Especially on a blue one like what mine is. Thanks.

From what I recall, the OEM top case was to small to put a helmet in.

Can anyone confirm this?

I'm kind of driving myself a little batty with all the options for top cases.

A couple questions about the OEM case: Does it come with the mounting bits or do you need to order a kit?

How comfortable are you with the plastic rack it sits on? I'm sure my wife will be leaning on the box as we ride, I'm concerned that the rack the box mounts on is just plastic. Am I being paranoid or should I just plan on getting a metal one?

Speaking of leaning on it, is there a backrest available? I don't see one on the Yamaha website, is there a generic that folks have used?

Thanks!

No kit. Remove the OEM plastic cover over the carrier and it clips into the OEM carrier below. Might need to change out a screw or two IIRC.

The weight limit for the Yammy top box is 11 lbs. I would not use it as a back rest. I am not aware of a backrest.
