So without going to the dealer is a place I can get a replacement lock for my oe panniers? Believe it or not I came home to find one missing from my right side panniers. There's no debating that the locks suck but that really didn't make my day. I'd rather it not be keyed the same as the bike as the locks are ridiculously hard on the keys so if there is a such a thing as after market locks could someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

Welcome Skyler.

The locks are not the problem...
... you lost one lock because someone did not use the suggested / required Blue Loctite on the two fastening screws.
... to lock or unlock the cases, press down on the lid(s) when turning the key.
... you can have a shorter key made, Ilco 254, at Certified Safe & Lock Co. 5933 Folsom Blvd Sacramento CA 916-457-9876. The shorter key will do everything but start the Tenere.
... OEM locks are the way to go. Ask Certified if they can re-key the differently keyed locks or buy the missing lock that is properly keyed.
... Contact Mike Spratt, Parts Manager, at PCP Motorsports. He will be able to take care of your needs. Tell him Tim Olmstead referred you.

Yamaha is now selling single and three lock sets for the OEM Pannier and Top Box. They aren't expensive and all keyed the same. Make sure you get blue locktite on those two screws. Also those screws are small Tamper proof star screws. dont' try to use a Phillips on them or regular hex.

I have an extra set of new locks that you can have if you arrange shipping.

Thanks for the info!

You are exactly correct on the lack of blue loctite. After managing to figure out how to open the case without the key I was greeted by the two mentioned screws in the bottom of the case. No evidence of loctite what-so-ever. Regardless to say, anything I put on that bike has loctite put on it otherwise it's bound to rattle loose with the nature of the twin and off-roading.

I did pull apart the locking mechanism after getting the case open. It really isn't that fantastically designed which is a shame as I like the OE panniers.

...thats your old bike sitting in PCP huh? I test rode it and almost bought it. I tried to convince them (Chad) to sell me the ohlins off the rear :) I have a 2013 (I bought used after deciding no on your old bike) and the rear shock is sadly lacking.

You missed out on a well built engine with a 2014+ Clutch Basket and Cam Chain Tensioner. The engine was built (crankshaft to head) by their Chief Mechanic Joe. Probably the best Yamaha mechanic in NorCal. You won't find a better Gen1 engine. It was a tough decision to trade it in on the 2015 ES.

The Ohlins is 40,000 miles into its life. It made a huge difference in the ride and handling.

The trick to the OEM luggage is to press down on the lid when opening and closing. The shorter key makes it easier.

Contact me for a ride.

If the bike didn't have 50+K on it I would have bought it. The resale on that bike wasn't good as a result of the miles, the engine rebuild is also a turnoff for uninformed buyers too.

I am so close to pulling the trigger on a new ohlins shock. The stock one I've bottomed out quite a few times in the 1500 miles I've done on the bike (probably only 200 off road). Aside from its lack of travel I swear the stock spring is made for someone @ 140lbs carry no gear. At 195, carrying a lot of gear... it doesn't do well. On the street the bike performs amazing well for what it is but the off-road stuff is were the rear really shows the bike up. Even with the preload set it just feels completely limp. I guess this has been covered already though ( ::002::).

As for replacing the stock bags for Givis.. I don't see that as an upgrade, unless I bought the outbacks and at that price there's better options imo.

I upgraded the stock shock with a heavier spring. It help with load but not with performance. An Ohlins or the likes would be your best bet. You might want to wait for IMS Sacramento in November to see if there will be any deals on a new rear shock. Other than that you can contact Mike Spratt at PCP Motorsports. He has been in the business since the 70's.

Well that's funny, I came on this forum to talk about this exact thing. I noticed my left pannier lock missing this evening. I figured out how to open the sucker, but annoyed at the sudden disappearance of my lock! I do have 1 extra under my seat.. Now, if the instructions said to put loctite on it, I would have. I've got a big bottle in my toolkit. But if it didn't then that is frustrating. =/
