Looking for a backrest that mounts on the rear rack. I would like one that is easily removed because I only want it when the wifey wants to go for a lunch run. Has anyone seen such a thing out there or am I going to have to try and make one?

As of right now you will have to make one. No free standing backrest are out there. Some owners have backpads mounted to their top boxes but no pax rest that would mount to the rack per say. One company was taking it on as a challenge but I haven't heard from him in months.

There are some backrests that will work on the rear rack. One is the Bakup for the BMW passenger. I think it is for the 1200 GS. It would be a very easy mount. The only problem is the cost.

If you can use something that does not bend, someone on here, adapted one from a scooter. Not much to it, just drilling some holes. I think.
I think a Utopia would work with some bending of the mounting bar..

I had one made by PiratesLair.net called Stealth backrest. It was originally made for the R1200gs that I had and when it left my life I kept the backrest. It mounts to the backrack with some modification and has 2 positions forward and backward and comes off with one knob or can be replaced with a bolt. The mounting base was originally silver, so I repainted it with black bedliner in a can and it looks like it was designed for the bike. The wife likes it very much whens she gets off of her bike and rides with me.

GOOD news, everyone! Have been in contact with Dan Vesel (of VStrom accessory fame... CHERDAN@webtv.net ) and he is in the process of making backrests for the ST. You can see an example on his website. I will be getting mine (for the AltRider luggage rack) this week (apparently easier to do as it's a simple bolt on with no spacers/longer bolts needed) and he is currently working on the standard luggage rack model. I think it's just a minimal modification from the standard VStrom rack.
Dan makes good quality stuff at a reasonable price...just don't ask for chrome.... ::025::
BTW, I am in no way affiliated with Dan or his company but have previously bought his products (for my Strom) and have been very satisfied with them...AND am just happy to FINALLY be getting a backrest for my SO (so she stops smacking my helmet when I accelerate... ::025::)
I'll post up some pics as soon as it arrives.
