My wife has accepted a job in Stuttgart, and I'm wondering if I should take my dirt bikes?! My son and I ride often and I really don't want to sell our bikes. I lived in Germany when I was on active duty, but I only road street. I don't remember seeing any areas to ride like we have in California. My WR250F does not have a tag plate and is not street legal. Our bikes have the California green stickers and thats it. My son and I ride at Hollister Hills SVRA.

Is there any riding areas like Hollister Hills in Germany? If not, is there any trails in the Stuttgart area that we could ride legally?

I will be taking my Tenere and Multistrada 1100S. I may sell the Multi, but with the tank issues I don't see it going anywhere. I have had the tank replaced and since Europe does not have any Ethanol that I am aware of, I may not have to worry about the tank in Germany. It is a fun bike with a face that only a mother could love, and me of course.

Thanks,
SFC E

You are on the edge of the Black Forest which has some trails and lots of great twisties, and only a couple of hours from the Alps, dunno about any proper off-road stuff, but plenty of amazing roads to explore ::008::

Rasher, thanks for the reply! I can't wait to get the Tenere over there, I was just hoping my son and I could still ride. I guess I'll need to get him some street gear and take him with me.

May find some private moto-x or Enduro tracks, but Europe lacks the wide open spaces that the US has, I am sure you will be able to ride somewhere, but probably not as cheaply as in the states and most likely you will be looking at smaller areas.

You could certainly fill many a weekend with Alps, Vosges, Black Forest, Hartz Mountains and Ardennes all close and the Pyrenees only a days ride away, there are lots of good trails around Europe, but many are classed as "unpaved roads" so you ought to be street legal.

Grab a logon at www.alpineroads.com and ask there, you will probably get some good feedback and there may be some places in the Alps or Pyrenees that are open to non road legal vehicles.

Grab a copy of the "Motorcycle journey's through the Alps and Beyond" book to give you some great routes and ideas for the Tenere ::008::

Lastly make sure your good lady is paid in dollars, the Euro is sinking fast ;)

I work in Stuttgart from time to time and haven't seen or heard of any dirt nearby....doesn't mean it isn't there, I just haven't seen it

Plenty of great paved riding though, realize that Stelvio Pass is only a few hours away, and there is a pretty robust motorcycle culture in town there, with a pretty cool loop around town for quick rides

MurphCo, I've been looking at places to ride and the Stelvio pass is at the top of the list. I'm putting the dirt bikes on Craigslist tonight, just hope I can sell them before we move. I really don't want to leave them in storage for 3 to 5 years.

Thanks,
SFC E

A couple of weeks ago I rented a bike and rode down to Neuschwanstein Castle, on paper it's only like 150-200 miles, but it took all day to get there and back, even coming back on the autobahn averaging 150mph on the way back....

You said you were stationed there before, so you probably already understand the time it takes

Where in Stuttgart ? I'm usually around Kelley Barracks, and plan on another ride later this summer, if yer interested you are welcome to come.....I was thinking France this time around

My wife will be working on Kelley Barracks! I would love to ride to France, I just hope we will have our house hold goods before the riding season is over. I think you all ready know the drill, I won't see my bike until we find housing, then get the goods delivered. We haven't shipped anything yet.

I was stationed in the Kitzingen/Wurzburg area for several years. I had a Duc 998 back then. I have more freedom to travel this time around being a civilian.

I've been to the Neuschwanstein Castle before and can't wait to take the kids there and see it on the bike.

When I'm settled in I'll send you a PM.

Hi guys,

You certainly are in a great area to be within striking distance off some of Europe's best roads. Awesome!

I am heading to Goslar in the Harz Mountains next week to give my S10 its first proper run, and really looking forward to it.

In September I am heading to the Pyrenees. The UK BMW Club are organising things, and they are a decent bunch. If you guys are interested in dropping by it would be good to have a beer with fellow S10 jockeys. There will be some nice rides, to be sure!

Take care,

Matt

Hey SFC E,

selling the dirt bikes seems like a good idea to me. Non-street-legal dirtbikes are almost useless here unless you own a farm or are a regular at a motocross track (which are rather rare). It is actually "verboten" to leave official roads, which are paved 99,9%.

Anyway you're moving to a great area for a motorcyclist. The Svabian Jura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swabian_Jura) right at your doorstep is famous with bikers, as well as the Black Forest west of Stuttgart. Also check out the north between the cities of Heilbronn and Schwäbisch Hall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schw%C3%A4bisch_Hall).

Maybe you wanna keep the Duc to do some serious Autobahn speeding - the S10 is not quite fast enough for those Audis and BMWs... ::002::

Take care and have a nice time

Man you guys are killing me...LOL I can't get any work done, all I can think about is riding in Germany again. I listed my dirt bikes on craigslist so we will see how that goes.
The DUC is coming also, it will be used for short sprints and hooligan rides.
Hope to see you on the road!

I'm stationed in northern Germany (in the vicinity of Hannover) and brought my motorcycles with me from Sweden. Used to do a lot of riding on gravel roads in Sweden and also some off-road with my BMW GS but here in Germany it's hard to find roads an possibilities like that. They do exist but are normaly not open for public traffic. Changed my knobblies to normal road tires after a while and since Germany has a lot of really nice and twisty roads it's still ok to live here.
