1 - place Great basin bag on passenger seat
2 - loop straps through stuff and tighten
3 - go ride!

Simple enough to find locations for the straps. Typical high quality gear from Giant Loop. Of course, having some help on hand is always handy...

"OK, so this road looks tasty!"

"Do you hear that?! It's the call of the road...or the cat next door farting..."

Now, I bought the Great Basin because last summer's ride with my GL Mojavi was maxed out carrying my repair/flat gear & first aid kits. Thus I needed to add another dry bag on the back, plus one of my Kreiga bags on the tail, and my knapsack. Doable, but there had to be a better way.

I have a liking for soft gear, too, so this would seem to be a decent step.

I bought the Great Basin and the 5 stuff-sack kit. Two sacks are tailored to fit down in the pointy ends of the main bag, and into those two sacks went EVERYTHING the Mojavi used to carry. So the Great Basin is, as it sits, full. And its filled with:

toolkit
cycle pump
tire patch kit
silicon tape
work matt
first aid kits (2, small)
flashlight
camp hatchet
sleeping bag
inflatable sleeping pad
2 person tent
tent footprint
jetboil kit (jet boil, gas canister, cooking utensils)
jetboil hanging kit
fleece jacket
socks (2 pair)
underwear (2 pair)
t-shirts (2)

...and still enough room in corners to stuff in some odds and ends - maybe a couple more tshirts, or 2/3 shop rags, etc. Could easily fit a small sack somewhere with things like fasteners, fuses, light bulbs, etc.

The Great Basin holds 60 litres, so the equivalent to a set of small panniers, or so.

The straps on the back are long enough, and there is enough room on top of the rotopax, for a small dry duffel to be mounted. I'll need to pick one up for toiletries, dehydrated food, jerky, water, etc.

Ideally, I'd like to locate a small, squarish bag that's designed to hang down over the sides of a rear seat, for example. One I can place over the rotopax that's low and wide to keep useful volume, but limit height. Have to look around for that. Might have to strap on the small Kreiga for now. We'll see.

Next up, a test ride...without the mutt! ;)

This is what drew me to soft gear - offroad. Last summer's week long ride was enough to convince me. :) While mostly onroad, it was still easy to manage the gear in soft bags with straps, access was good and everything stayed dry. I have my MoJavi mounted on the bike when I wiped out in the woods, and it suffered zero damage.

sportsguy - Very nice setup! A Great Basin is definitely in my future. Is that the Fandango tank bag on the front? I've had one on my KLR for about a year and recently removed the harness to do some work on the bike. The harness had scuffed the hell out of my tank. They warn you about that but I didn't heed the warning. Fortunately I was able to sand and polish the scuffs out (95% anyway) but it took some $$$ and effort. I'm curious if you put any protection on your tank under the straps? If yes, what did you use and how hard was it to apply? GL recommends 3M Scotchgard sheets but those look like they would be a pain to apply to a non-flat surface like a gas tank. I've been very happy with the Fandango, though, and it looks like it fits perfectly on the ST.

Its the Diablo - a bit taller, IIRC, than the Fandango.

They did recommend 3M plastic, I bought it and it remains uninstalled. Haven't moved the harness yet to check for rubbing, but I'm sure I'll find some. I expect to do a lot of cutting and piecing together with the 3M plastic protector stuff, but I'm waiting on warmer weather before tackling this job.
