Hi all,

Following previous excellent service from Darren in transforming the handling of my GS, I dropped in today and talked through the options to upgrade the suspension on the S10.

I forgot just how clean and tidy his workshop is. More like a lab, and inspires real confidence. He was setting up 3 new Fireblades for their owners when I got there, and they were delighted with the result.

Wilbers shock on order and this will be fitted in a few weeks at the same time as he sets up the front end to match.

Really looking forward to this!

Matt

Matt,

Spoke to Darren a while back, has he measured and ridden your bike

I have been fiddling at home and prefer the steering with pre-load almost at max so want a ride height adjuster, what did Darren recommend for yours?

Hoping you going in first saves me two visits as he should have a good idea of what I need so I can get everything ordered and just run up for fitting ::001::

Hi,

Darren said the standard shock is very under sprung, and he said that just the correct spring rate on the Wilbers should be plenty good enough. Did not recommend a Tue height adjuster, but I am sure if you suggest it he will be only too pleased to supply it!

Looking forward to getting it all set up.

Just got home from having my new Wilbers fitted. Absolutely fantastic. Quicker turn-in, smoother ride and much better handling. Well worth the money, and Darren, Tom and Keith were great as usual.

I need to go out again and ride!

Can I ask how long it took to fit and how much did it cost all in?
Cheers

They normally allow 1/2 day per bike, in that time they can strip forks and rear shocks on most bikes, re-valve / re-spring if need be, put it all back together and do a full setup.

I will be looking through latest credit card bills over this weekend to work out when they can next withstand a bashing and then book in.

The MCT guys are on Holiday next week, I will be calling them as soon as they return to get booked in - they typically have a 4-8 week lead time, when I phoned earlier this week they were fully booked for the next six weeks.

I am going for the fully adjustable Wilburs with 3-way damping (Rebound plus Hi and Low speed compression) remote pre-load adjuster and ride height adjuster, plus a fork re-work.

The shock is the same as I had on my GS and it was brilliant on that bike, especially for two-up where the ability to adjust the compression damping independantly allowed for a perfect setup for swinging through Alpine bends two-up fully loaded ::013::

Just booked in for end of August.

Going for the higher spec Wilburs with Hi and Low Speed Compression Damping adjustment, Rebound Damping, Remote Pre-load and a Ride Height adjuster to speed up the steering a bit and increase the ground clearance.

Also going to have forks re-worked, they are fairly certain the springs are adequate but will modify the damping as they reckon that is the main issue with the Tenere front end. If nothing else changing the OE oil will probably help, in my experience this is never top grade stuff and often fill levels can vary quite a lot.

A mate rides for the CSS and they have found huge differences with their fleet of R1's and R6's in the past with OE oil levels and shock gas pressures. I suspect just a basic service, top grade oil and careful fill could make a noticeable difference.

Hi fella,

Exactly what they found with mine, Darren did not exactly "rework" the front end, but just set it up. He said that the springs seemed ok for road work, but maybe changing the oil could make a difference. He suggested that if I was going to go off-road at all that different springs may be sensible. To be honest it feels fine to me after he tweaked it, and I am throwing it around at least as well as I did the GS.

I must admit I am of the opinion that the more things there are to adjust the more I can mess it up, and after a discussion agreed with Darren the standard Wilbers with the remote preload would be the best for my use. I am happy to compromise perfection to achieve simplicity. It seems like you are prepared to do a lot more tweaking than I am, and you should get some great results from that.

Hope to see you out and about soon.

Did my first fully loaded run this weekend - BOING - BOING

I had the pre-load fully wound up and the mirrors were still pointing at the floor

To be honest all things considered I was surprised how well it handled like this, I also ended up winding the damping in 5 turns by which point it was a bit wallowy but reasonably well controlled.

Biggest issue was ground clearance, even with ball of feet on pegs I kept skimming the boot even at a fast cruise and the left peg went down properly once despite my best efforts to avoid this as I am always worried of decking something solid.

Ordered the Wilburs today, gave all my details so they will sort the spring rate, I am guessing it will be 150-160, they moved my GS from a 140 to a 150 and that was brilliant.

Gone for the 3-way damping so I can put extra compression on for two-up use, I consider the Mrs and 25kg of luggage enough extra rebound if you can control the spring on the way down.

Also getting the ride height adjuster so I can wind an extra 8 mm on the back to begin with, that should help a lot with ground clearance (about the same as moving pre-load adjuster 2 lines, but without compromising the sag) combined with a stiffer spring and better damping the ground clearance issue will be resolved.

Getting forks re-worked as well, still working on the theory of the springs being OK and some re-working of damping / oil type / air gaps will improve the front.

All booked in and shock ordered, can't wait ::013::

Just got back from having my suspension sorted and got to say I am very impressed, not done much other than ride home so will update later after some more varied riding.

Initial impressions are very good, the bike had the top of the range Wilburs shock fitted (3-way damping and remote pre-load adjustment) and I had the forks looked at. The shock was already built to spec from Wilburs, a couple of MM longer for about 5mm extra ride height to start with and sprung for my mix of solo and two-up use.

The forks took a bit of messing with, MCT reckoned it sat too high (too much pre-load built in to the setup) and the spring was a bit stiff as it quickly ends up on the stiffer part of the dual rate, so out went the Yamaha springs and in came a 0.90 linear spring with zero pre-load as installed. The watered down cooking oil Yamaha use as suspension fluid was swapped out for some top quality 10wt.

As soon as the forks went in the sag with me onboard was bang on 60mm (Perfect - rider sag should be 1/3rd of total travel) this meant the front was also sitting about 5-10mm lower as well which should aid steering.

As soon as I rode it the difference was obvious, both front and rear, starting with the rear:-

The back end now just seems sublime, I never found any problems with the OEM shock other than two-up, so was surprised to instantly notice a huge difference, hard to describe as it feels really plush, but also really nicely controlled and you can feel it tracking the road, and also sense exactly what the rear tyre is up too, it also seems to soak up bumps much better. With a stiffer (150nm) spring and a lot of pre-load and damping adjustment it should make an even bigger difference to the two-up experience. This setup is far nicer than the (almost identical) Wilburs felt on the GS - probably due the Yamaha's Rising rate over the GS' primitive direct bolted shock

The forks are now MUCH better, I always found them a bit clunky and prone to diving, they still dive quite a bit, bit feel far more controlled, not surprisingly they also feel very linear, so the more you brake the more they dive, I reckon before they just crashed down to the stiffer rate and then stopped - now they feel really nice, especially when braking on bumps - but even in a straight line the soak up the bumps much nicer, it makes the OE setup feel as if there is a load of stiction, the difference really is night and day.

The combined effect is the bike just seems to float along the road, small imperfections are entirely eliminated and bigger bumps that once put a shock up the spine are now 90% absorbed. Feedback from both tyres is enhanced and cruising seems more relaxed.

I can't wait to get a day on some decent twisties to properly test the setup ::001::
