In process of gathering up stuff to attempt MC camping on the ST. Have tent and sleeping bag, but need recommendations for a sleeping pad.

Considered Thermarest base camp (not too spendy). Also looking a the Thermarest Dreamtime (quite spendy, but great reviews).

Anyone have a favorite?

I use the Dreamtime and would not go with any other pad at this point. Another few pounds doesn't seem to upset the bike and my body/back REALLY appreciate it!! ::008::

Pony up for the exped down mat, the price will only hurt for a little while, the warmth and comfort will last a long time.

Another vote for the Exped downmat. It's worth every $. I can sleep on my side and my hip will not touch the ground and the insulation properties are incredible.

Give some thought to what kind of conditions you're going to be camping in. I started out using an Alps Mountaineering 2" self-inflating pad, which works pretty well, but I find the insulation properties warm during the summer.

I have a brand new Aerobed Pakmat on deck that I haven't used yet. I'm hoping it sleeps cooler during the summer and also is more comfortable since it inflates to 5" high.

I haven't used any other pads yet, so my experience is limited.

+1 on the Thermarest...I have a TrailPro, which I've used since I was a Scout Master 10 years ago....I don't like to pack a lot of stuff and folded up, it fits easily in the saddle bags and is the base for my Trekker Chair, which I also pack.

Sleeping is very comfortable...though I usually puff some air in to fill it to the max.

go with the Exped - packs much smaller, has a built in pump, and is very warm. Only downfall is it's not self inflating like my thermorest, but for me the saving of space is great (good for a side sleeper) (but then so was my thermorest)

I got the Exped synmat 7 - haven't tried it yet but I'm assuming for the price it's going to be better than anything else I have...

...which means I have

a 3/4 length Thermarest
a full length and thicker Thermarest
a Big Agnes rectangular Air Core

which are all now redundant. I you're interested in any of them, let's talk! ;D

I have the exped synmat dlx 7 and it's great, the ground is no longer an issue even with the temps in the teens and it packs nicely.

I'm just buying my camping gear as I have not camped in a looooong time.. I purchased the Exped syn 7 on basis of the great reviews from here and other places.

Took the mat out and let it fill out, then put air into it.. Wow, this is going to be great. I had to let air out until It was comfortable. I think this is the best piece of gear I have purchased so far.. ::008::

Another vote for the Exped. I have the Downmat 9, because I am a side sleeper and I am always cold. I can sleep on the Exped, as happily as I sleep in my own bed.
