for what's it's worth, my oem locks are getting better with use. I'm going to squirt some dry graphite in them and see if it helps though.

Definitely use some graphite on them to keep them smooth. ::026::

I've ridden a lot of gravel and have only cleaned my locks once. I hit 'em with compressed air now and again. As long as I press down on the lid while opening/closing, they work pretty well.

just a reminder to always use something like dry graphite powder on locks and NEVER wet products like wd40 or the like. Wet lubes will eventually collect dust and dirt inside the mechanism which will seize and destroy the lock.

I have not found a single problem with the locks on the OEM boxes. As long as you press down on the lid before turning the key they open easily with no fear of bending the key whatsoever. I have not used any kind of lube in them yet but I've only had the bike since September last year. ::008::

There have been a number of threads on the locks on the OEM cases and many folk have reported bending the key. First, make sure you have watched The Video. Then, as suggested, use dry lube regularly. I found them usable once I had done those things, but some very respected and knowledgeable members here have had problems like yours. From what I understood they mostly affected EU bikes.

Found out from my dealer today that was was a service bulletin on the early bikes. The nut provided for the lock wasn't tightening the lock to the case .

I have had mine since August of last year with zero problems. If the locks were installed correct w/thread-locker (blue) on the screws and the open/close procedure is performed properly I feel you should not have problems with them. ::008::

After my issue with the top case. The dealership made me two key's ( I want to say out of aluminum) the oem key was a little sort when turning the lock in the pannier. Since then I haven't had any problems with the cases.

justc ame from a 3000km trip up to malaysia n thailand using the yamaha panniers. in thailand road conditions bad with bumps n holes, the both lids kept popiing out. had no choice but to secure the lids with bungee cord. other than tat the boxes were good as its easier squeezing in between cars as the boxes are narrow

I only have the side cases: had 'issues w/ the locks' early on and fiddled around like others here, then took the rubber cap off the inside of the lock and could see that the special screws securing the locks were loose. Took the bike to a dealer and asked them to tighten those security screws w/ their special security tool... once that was done, I've had no probs since. Yes the double-ribbed water seal/lid gasket is so tight/good that you should press down on the covers b4 trying to open. Have experienced beaucoup dust/dirt, vibe/shock, rain/mud/moisture/mahem... since, am in & out of the cases often for coffee thermos, changing gloves/spare bits, no worries.

This is a really common Yamaha thing. Most put a drop of blue loctite on the security screws. I don't have the Yamaha bags on the S10, but on the FJR they were just T10 torx security screws. Easy to find security bit sets at auto parts stores, Home Depot in the US, etc. Loctite is your friend. Otherwise they always come loose and cause problems. Do remember, loctite will eat ABS plastic. Do not over do it!
