Ok, I like the linked brakes. Pull front lever, one finger. get some back brake. Save energy. Be lazy....relaxing...nice.. But what's the main purpose?

Also, if the brakes are unlinked by tapping back brake, when do they become "re-linked" ?
5 seconds? One minute? How do I know? What if I accidentally tap back brake and think they are linked and then hit too much front brake? Ok... That last question is just dumb, but I was curious for no particular reason...

Not tapping the rear brake first, applying the rear brake first. Once you've released the rear brake and re-applied the linked front hand brake lever, everything is back to normal, no delays.

find a copy of the service manual, either electronic or paper. there is a very comprehensive description of how the linked brake system works. Don is right in his above post and there is more complexity to know to get full performance from the UBS.

Don answerd the re-link question. In a nutshell it's there for panic situations as is ABS. Difference being it's there to maximise stopping power in a coordinated fashion. When thought of by itself, It's most effective when braking in straight line. If you have to stop immediately and just grab a handful of front brake and you will get 'some' amount rear brakef which is controlled by how hard you squeeze. I had a Blackbird with something similar only it didn't have ABS. Never liked that too much because if you went into a corner too hot you really had to be careful with the front brake or the rear would kick out. With the S10 we have ABS, so that will never happen.
