It's got to pull the oil seal out with the shaft, so I'd expect some effort involved as the seal is a light press fit. I'de gently work it back and forth a bit and see if you get progress. Sounds good so far, but to err on the side of caution is not a bad thing. You have good common sense, just listen to it and go with what feels right.
Spoke to my local dealer and they can't do it before Christmas so it is up to me. They can't get that No 39 seal for 10 days as well as it is on backorder. Apparently not used all that often. They suggested I take it to a bearing place and they should have one.

The seal will have numbers on the face of it that identify the size and type. The bearing supply place can find what you need from those. Note, that is the face that goes out, or towards the trans, when installing the oil seal, but you likely know that already.

Ok, all fixed then. Only had to replace the seal closest to the transmission. Had to come from Yamaha as local
bearing suppliers couldn't help. Apparently it is multi directional or something but definitely an OEM part. About $13 or so on the Yamaha parts list in the US but $80AUD in oz between Christmas and new year. Haha. Bit much but I got to ride with my son today so all good.

Thanks for all the help.

Glad you got it sorted. Sucks that it cost as much as it did.

Ride on, ride happy, and Happy New Year to you. ::008::

oil in pumpkin?

I changed the rear tire today for the first time and since i read online i should pull the "pumpkin" and clean and lube the drive shaft did I do so.
So when i pulled the shaft out there was a small amount of oil in there also quite a bit of corrosion on the lower portion of the shaft.
Is the oil in there normal?
Bike is a 2012 with 19'000 km's on it.
hopefully the picture will work

Re: oil in pumpkin?

There shouldn't be much, if any oil collecting in the housing. A small amount may leak past the coupling gear seal if it gets contaminated with dirt or rust which can accumulate at that low point. A good cleaning of the seal and the coupling gear it contacts helps. I put a thin coat of anti corrosion grease on all of it to help prevent any further corrosion.
A bit of grease to the splined end of the shaft, reassemble and keep an eye for any possible leaks through the small hole in the bottom of the housing. Pic. was taken around 30,000 km.
And others have found that when you reassemble its good practice to leave the 4 closed head nuts slightly loose till you get the wheel and axel installed and torqued up. Then finish tightening the 4 nuts. This helps the axel-final drive align itself properly.

i cleaned it up and put it back together. I don't really know much about this bike yet i also don't know how the previous owner took care of her. I will pull it apart again in a couple months and investigate.

Final drive leak-quesrion

There are several threads that I've read, but still unclear on this, so I thought I'd ask. My bike has had evidence of a small leak since I bought it at 25k miles, has almost 40k now. The back side of the housing gets stained, but there are never drips, and the fluid level never seems to be low.

Do we think this needs attention, or just observation? There is evidence that enough escapes to get to the wheel, but again, never any dripping in evidence.

Thoughts?

When you next have the wheel off, clean the drive as best as you can, then try running a SealMate or other very thin plastic film under the seal.

[Moved your post to this thread, as there is already good info in it for you.]

It's happened before. In fact, not even uncommon.
Especially if you make any effort to clean things up, while diagnosing.

Drives ya crazy, eh?

Especially when your low on funds I got two Shinkos coming in.
My just talk him into doing the seal unless it's not that time consuming for the rest.
And I still have the clutch pressure plate thing to deal with although that has stopped making noise as well. ::)
