Going to turn 50 in a year and can retire.. I wont because of insurance... Had a DL650 with 30k from new. Loved it and fit me well, then thought I needed something faster- Tiger 1050- Crashed in Gold country of california. SO looking for an potential Iron Butt, off-road touring bike for a bigger guy- 6'2, 240lbs and bad knees due to work. Everything except the power of this bike seems to fit the bill. 2015 ES model that is. So, hoping to pull the trigger in March of 16 on a left over 15ES.

What's wrong with the power? I'm bigger than you and it has no problem hauling me and cases full of gear around with speed and confidence. It's not as quick as sport bikes or the sportier touring bikes but those bikes can't go off-road (easily anyway) and less suited to ride 2 up with luggage.

Sorry, no insult intended, I test rode one and coming off a v-twin it seemed flat, But I have read several posts about that not being an issue once you ride it for a while. Its like everything, never satisfied.... To me this bike seems perfect for me.
Thanks

Welcome to the site.

When you test rode the bike, were you in T(ouring) mode or S(port) mode?

On my first test ride, I was underwhelmed, and later realized that I was in touring mode. I went back for another demo ride, and this time put the bike in sport mode. It was as if I was riding a very different bike, and I was instantly much more impressed. And I kept getting more impressed the more miles that I put on the bike, after I purchased it.

I find the bike kind of sneaky fast. Looking at the speedometer I'm often surprised at the speed compared to what I was sensing. The engine just doesn't express much drama or feel like it's doing very much. Being used to four cylinder bikes, there is just never the same level of "business" communicated from the engine, so it feels slower than it is.

I have had big v-twins, and while the torque feel is unique and has a but feel of fast, they are pretty slow in reality, check some art mile times... The S10 is so linear that you don't realize how fast it is. No real rush anywhere, because the power is almost always there and pulls smooth.

Congrats on retirement. I am close and plan to ride my S10 wife my wife around the country for a long while ::012::

Greetings from Malta and welcome to the forum. You need to test the S10 in 'S' mode. The 'T' mode lashes out milder power on acceleration.

A warm U.K welcome ::022:: ::26::

The power of the S10 is plenty for most folk, and the whole bike improves somewhat after 4- 5000 miles, I've had bikes before with lots of power and TBH most of it is wasted on us mere mortals, what I'm saying is my S10 takes me everywhere I need at exactly the same speed as a bike with 40+ more bhp, plus its reliable which is more than can be said of some bikes ::025::

I went from a DL650 to a 2015 Tenere. I put about 22K on the DL and had no complaints. But, I like this bike the best of any that I have ridden. I echo the comments about the Sport vs Touring setting; it makes a lot of difference. You will love this bike!

::004:: danner21. I am hard pressed to remember the last time I had my Super Ten in "T" mode. I find the power more than adequate - it's no Hayabusa, but has plenty of get up and go for me. ::008::

Cheers,

Bruce

Same here, had a DL650, super smooth engine, the best gear shift on all the bikes I had ridden (complete contrast to the S10), the power is up about 40% and the weight 25% so overall a gain, even a modest one.

If you can buy before Jan 1 when the discounts from Yamaha are better. Who knows if they will offer much if the inventory is low.

I went from a 2005 FJR1300 to a 2015 S10-ES. The FJR was a totally different type of ride with gobs of power and fast as I would ever need, handled great and stopped on a dime with the ABS brakes. Rode that bike for 10 years and several long road trips and always was thinking to myself....Hmmmm where does that dirt road go to!!!! Well I finally pulled the trigger and traded the FJR for the Tenere and I am very pleased with the bike. Yes I know it is not the fastest adventure tourer out there but in my opinion it has done everything really good so far. The power of the engine seems to be good for what it is and I am perfectly fine with that. Comfort wise being 6'4" and pushing 285lbs is good, will most likely do a seat upgrade in a couple years, handles the twisty mountain roads here in Colorado exceptionally well which was a surprise to me coming from the FJR, and it brakes seem to be top notch so what else can you ask for........ohh reliability....thats right I have that also. Everyone says why didn't you get the beemer and I tell them the bang for the buck you can't beat the Yamaha.
