I wouldn't pass judgment yet. Honda builds some decent vehicles, so they are definitely a contender.

I'm curious what the characteristics of the V4 engine will be. Has anybody ever ridden a Honda with the V4?

Well the ST1300 is brilliant IMHO. The VFR1200 is a fantastic machine .... had I not bought the FJR I'd have gotten me one. The bike is very powerful, smooth and pulls nicely ... the motor is sweet. Looks ... well not totally to my taste but definitely something you could live with. It's not a long range machine though .... could be if it had a larger tank but that wouldn't phase me none.

As a Honda car owner for the past six years I can say its the best and most reliable car I have ever owned. Honda are a very strong, innovative company and pushed the envelope of engine technology for quite some time, DOHC and SOHC VTEC for example, then iVTEC. Sure the bikes seem to have been infected by the futuristic styling they use for their cars, but I have heard many good things about the Honda Varadero, albeit I personally strongly dislike the appearance of that bike as well as not being enamoured by the apperance of the Cross-Runner. Shame to be bummed out by appearance as I really like the V4 concept and from what I've heard Honda lead the pack in terms of motorcycle reliability.

I have had 6 Hondas with V4 engines and loved them all. Two were VFR750's with 180 degree cranks and the other were 1 ST1100 and 3 ST1300's with 360 degree cranks. These had different personalities, as the VFR engines were very quick to rev and had a sporty sound and feel. The ST engines were designed more for torque, as befitting a two up sport touring machine and while not as sporty, were very good engines, lots of power everywhere and very smooth. The ST1300 engine was more sporty in sound and feel than my ST1100 and I liked them a lot.

My dealer sells both Honda and Yamaha and as a part time employee (retirement job) I can get my new bikes at invoice and chose the ST1300 over the FJR1300 each time, because I liked the engine better than the inline 4. They are both great bikes, it all depends on personal taste, in my opinion. That is why, when a customer asks which of these two bikes are best, I will tell them to take a demo ride on each and then decide.

We have the VFR1200 in both standard and DCT versions in stock and I have ridden them both. That new engine is incredible and my plans were that if they came out with a true sport touring version with larger tank, etc, like the ST1300, I would get one. That is, until the Super Tenere was announced in Feb. That is when I called Yamaha USA and told them that I thought they should bring it here. My dealer was even doing some exploration on the possibility of bringing a few Euro models here. We decided to wait to see if Yamaha USA would come thru and they did. I believe mine is the second one ordered in the USA, per the order numbers I have seen posted and I am eagerly waiting for May. In the meantime my 08 ST1300A is sitting on the sales floor.

I admit I have something against Honda and they just don't even try to please me :p

Why are their bikes so FUGLY??? This is one of the worst IMHO

I can't ride a bike that hurt my eyes every time I look at it. Just can't...

Well, as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Most of the people that see my ST1300 sitting on the sales floor and then see pics of the S10 that I have ordered, say they think I am nuts for trading such a beautiful bike on such an ugly one. I am the buyer, and I am buying the S10 for what I hope it can do, not for its looks. and I am comfortable with that. Of course, I am also selling my 08 KLR650 that I love, so I have learned to appreciate function over form.

As others have chimmed in, the ST1100 and ST1300 were/are great machines. I've owned 5 ST1100's and one ST1300 going back to April of '91 when I bought my first ST1100. Many prefer the 13 to the 11, but I was kinda so-so to the 13. I did not care for the amount of heat that hit my lower legs, compared to the 1100. On the highway, the 1100 was more stable, but in the twisties, the 1300 was better. Loved the adjustable windscreen of the 1300. As for the V4 in general - butter smooth.

@Fredz43

I understand that point of view. I think I've been lucky since all bikes I got so far have suited me in function and form. Maybe that's why I think this way.

Please, don't misunderstand my taste against Honda with saying they make bad bikes. I just don't like the form and/or colour schemes (based on what they sell here)

Others have already hit all th ehigh points. I had a 1984 VF500f Interceptoer that is probably my all-time favorite bike. While the V4s may not pack the top end punch of an online 4, they are extremely flexible. I have owned both a ST1100 and ST1300. having spent most of my riding years on sporty bikes, I liked the 13 for it's more spirited handling. I hand a chance to demo the new VFR1200dct in Taos, NM last summer. That is an amazing engineering tour de force. The clutch less shifting has to be experienced to really appreciate how good it is. But I digress, The S10 fits what I am looking for better than the Honda version of an adventure bike. I had two XS500 Yamahas many moons ago so the idea of a parallel twin does not bother me.

I too am a veteran of Honda V4's. Oh my gosh!! SMOOOOOOOTH baby!!!! I remember my first long trip in 1997 riding from Ohio to Montana most of it on slab. People would tell me that Montana had "Reasonable yet Prudent" posted for their speeds. Honda ST1100 V-4s are made for all day comfort in triple digit speeds!!! I set the throttle at 100 mph and rode through a whole tank of gas one right after the next for 150 miles each tank full. 7.4 Gallons of fuel at 25mpg at 100mph. NO wind, no engine feel, ok so it felt like a Sewing machine on steroids.
TO this day i think the ST1100 was a smoother cooler running engine at 100mph. I think even smoother than the ST1300 which was still an awesome running engine!!! When I see friends who have 200kmiles, and 325kmiles on these engines, I think they ARE THE BEST EVER MADE!!!
This is part of why I AM SO STOKED ABOUT THE TENERE is the reliability of Japanese, SHAFT DRIVE and ABS!!!! THis will be the closest bike to my previous Honda's I will come close to owning!!!!
This was after my 85 Honda V65 Sabre V4 that made 120 hp, and torgue that would make your pants sorta damp!!!
V4 a HONDA LEGEND!!!!!!

Where are these order numbers posted? Do you have any idea how many Teneres have been ordered?

I don't know that they are posted anywhere. We have had discussions on advrider about order numbers, which your dealer gets when he orders one. This was posted there some time ago:

We have since found that order numbers are not just for the S10 orders.
However my order number is 155951 and if they did start with 155950, mine is the second one ordered. I haven't seen any numbers lower than that.

Thanks Fred, I will have to call my dealer for my number.

Guys .... Please do not hijack this thread.
Want to start another about the order numbers? It is all good stuff and will be lost if buried in here with smooth running Honda engines. ;)

FredZ, The dealer where I got mine through has it confimed (throught Yamaha) that his (the owner) is #1 order for the Super Tenere's in the states. That same dealer has three on order at this time, one of which is mine. Yamaha has backed this up and says the bikes are going to be shipped probably in lots of 50 to the states.
As for the order numbers, the numbers are in fact mixed in with all other Yamaha machines ordered this year, so it doesn't have any direct reflection on the total number Teneres have sold. You can get the Tenere numbers from your Area Manager.

Heck I am crossing my fingers hoping since his was #1 that maybe Yamaha will just throw in the other two on the same truck!!! I know, I am wishful thinking!!!! I mean it is almost Christmas!!!
