After I totaled my Honda ST1100 (oops) I bought a Versys in 2010, which really scratches my playfulness- and off-tarmac-itches. The Versys sometimes feels a tad small under my 6'-5" frame, but it certainly fits me well enough to put 40,000 miles on it in 4 years.

In the meantime I've been salivating over the Super Tenere ever since the early sign up lists started and delivery of the 2012 models weren't even made yet.
And I still want one.
I expect the Super Tenere will satisfy the sport touring capability of the ST1100 with the off-tarmacability (yeah, that's a word now) of the Versys, only better.
Probably in the last quarter of this year I can corral the money to actually buy one.

Welcome. I would agree with your estimate of the Tenere being a pretty good sport touring bike. My Tenere replaced a Honda ST1300. And yes, the Tenere does most everything the ST1300 did, nearly as well. And it can be ridden off road too.

::004:: from iowa! Saving now should net you a decent deal once this year's riding season winds to an end.

Welcome to the forum. Keep looking at the "For Sale" section here. There have been some great deals on used bikes come up.
