Trevor,

I like what the Aussies did with their air filters and I prefer oiled foam filters, especially off-road. Can you tell me what size the filters are (ID, OD, Length)? These filters look like the universal clamp-on UNI's.

Thanks.

Yes, I believe they are Uni-Filter - an Australian company. But someone priced them a while ago, and the equivalent Uni's were something like $80, while the Yamaha parts were $56. Weird eh?

Part # (or size specs) would be great!

If I remember correctly those air filters came on the AUS bikes replacing the OEM air filter. Wasn't there a concern/problem with the wire cage, where it slides inside the TB, interferring with the flow of the air. Did Greg and others replace them with a K&N OEM type air filter?

If not, then I can blame my thoughts on the 60's. 8)

Yea, make sure the 'spring' is in there to support the filter. Other wise with will collapse and that would be bad..... We will soon have the BMC and K&N panel filter available for a good price on the web site....

Anybody have a part no. for the foam filters? My local dealer (USA) could not find them here.

The pictures on the Wasp bike show the filters being held on by what looks like zip or cable ties? Is this correct?

Thanks.

I will be interested in the links.....i drop my forks 4 mm in my racebike and it changes the bike DRAMATICALLY. I think the S10 has fairly good handling as it is and would be a bit nervous making it more twitchy.

Part number 23P14451UF00 - but I doubt they will be on the US parts fiche. Label says "Yamaha Australia".

Yes, held on by zip ties - supplied in the kit!

Bastard of a thing to clean and oil.

I eventually ditched them in the bin and replaced with K&N.

Greg.
Greg, maybe I should have been going through your trash!

The only foam filters I've had before were on my KLR - there was only one of them and easy to get to, so I didn't mind cleaning. Took about 15 minutes total. I know it's not going to be as easy with the S10 but I figure it could be done in under an hour? So then the question is - how frequently should they be cleaned?

I know this is going to vary greatly depending on conditions - but would you say on average every 5000km? The instructions with the kit helpfully say "clean at recommended intervals, more frequently in harsh conditions" - without saying what the recommended intervals are...

I think it's likely that I'm going to end up running the K&N, but I've seen how much grit they let through when they are clean... takes a while for them to block up and the dirt helps filter out - the dirt... But the upside is they will go a long time between cleanings. At a rough guess I think I'd be cleaning the foam filters 4 times for every one K&N cleaning. Worth it? Dunno...

Trevor,

You did not happen to take any measurements of these filters (ID, OD, Length) by chance?

As far as cleaning, the foam filters on my dirt bikes which see much more harsh environments that the ST I clean when they get a coating of sand/grit on the outside - which in my environment is about every month or so, but this is hundreds of miles in the desert on single track & sand washes. It really depends on where you ride.

In order to check how well the filters are filtering, a old dirt bike trick is to put a small dab of grease in the intake when we clean the filters. Dirt that gets thru the filter will stick to the grease giving you a indication on how well the filter is filtering & sealing to the airbox (a real issue with some bikes).

If I remember correctly...

The foam filters are expanded and mounted by wire. Part of the wire slides inside the FI opening... if I remember correctly the wire disturbs the flow of air. I could be wrong but the information is on Greg's thread.
